Show or Hide the Lock Option in the Windows Start Menu

Windows does not document a direct toggle for the Start menu’s Lock entry. Find its location by Windows version, or lock instantly with Windows key + L.

Windows does not have a Microsoft-documented setting specifically for showing or hiding the Lock command in the Start menu’s account menu. Its location also differs by Windows version: current Windows 11 instructions place it under Start > Power, while Windows 10 instructions place it in the user picture or Accounts menu. To lock immediately, press Windows key + L.

Where to find Lock in Windows 11 and Windows 10

Windows version or instructions Where Microsoft says to find Lock
Current Windows 11 instructions Open Start, select Power, then select Lock.
Earlier Windows 11 versions Microsoft says the command appeared under the Accounts menu.
Windows 10 instructions Open Start, select the user picture or Accounts icon, then select Lock.

These are Microsoft’s documented locations, not a guarantee that every Windows build or organization-managed device displays identical controls. Microsoft also documents Start menu account and power navigation in its Start menu screen-reader guide.

Can you show or hide the Start menu’s Lock entry?

The official Microsoft documentation cited here does not establish a supported setting that directly toggles the Lock entry in the Start menu account-profile menu. If Lock is missing, check which Windows version and build the device is running and whether an organization manages it; the menu’s location has changed between Windows versions.

Microsoft documents a policy named Remove Lock Computer, but its stated effect is narrower: it prevents a user from locking the system using Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The policy description does not say that it removes the Lock command from the Start menu, so it should not be treated as a verified way to hide that specific entry.

Who the documented policy applies to

Microsoft lists the policy as user-scoped and supports it on Windows 11 version 21H2 or later, with Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions in scope. Its Group Policy location is User Configuration > System > Ctrl+Alt+Del Options. The policy is administrator-facing; Microsoft’s documentation does not support applying these instructions to Windows Home or using registry edits as an endorsed alternative. See Microsoft’s Policy CSP – ADMX_CtrlAltDel for its documented scope and effect.

Lock Windows without opening Start

Press Windows key + L to lock the device directly. Locking keeps applications and files open in the background. To return, authenticate with the account’s password, PIN, or configured Windows Hello method. Microsoft documents the shortcut and behavior in User Account Access in Windows.
