Lower output can feel more comfortable in a dark room, while a brighter room or screen glare may call for more light. The right adjustment also depends on which setting you mean by “brightness.”
Which TV setting changes how bright the picture looks?
On many LED LCD TVs, the control that changes the screen’s light output is called Backlight. On OLED TVs, it may be called OLED Pixel Brightness or simply Brightness. Names and menus vary by model, so check your TV’s manual if you are unsure. RTINGS explains the distinction in its TV calibration guide.

Black Level is different: it affects how dark the signal’s black level appears. Lowering it too far can crush shadow detail, making dark areas look uniformly black and hiding objects or textures. If the screen feels too luminous, adjust the light-output control rather than lowering Black Level.
How should you adjust brightness for your room?
In a dark room
The same screen output can feel much more intense in a dark room than in daylight. Lower the TV’s luminance control gradually until the picture is comfortable, while checking that you can still see details in dark scenes. There is no universal minimum setting or single correct luminance for every viewer.

In a bright room
Daylight, lamps, and reflections can make a picture harder to see. Increasing screen output may help the image remain visible against that ambient light. ENERGY STAR describes automatic brightness control as a feature that adjusts a TV’s brightness in response to room lighting; availability and behavior depend on the set.
A U.S. Department of Energy technical report summarizes a study by Matsumoto and colleagues (2011) in which subjects preferred TV luminance of 160–248 cd/m² at 100 lux. That is a study result under particular room conditions, not a universal target or a setting recommendation for your TV. The report also discusses an ISF dark-room figure of 150 cd/m², attributed to ISF data and personal communication; it should not be treated as a universal regulatory standard. See the Department of Energy report on room illuminance and automatic brightness control.

Does the advice change for HDR?
Yes. HDR content can use a wider range of brightness, and TVs may change picture behavior or settings when HDR is detected. Lowering the luminance control can dim the whole image, including highlights intended to stand out. SDR adjustments therefore do not transfer mechanically to HDR.
If HDR looks uncomfortably bright, RTINGS suggests trying these model-dependent options:

- LED strips itself is black, not noticeable; Easy to install, take 5 to 10 minutes
- Turn off Dynamic Tone Mapping, if your TV offers it.
- Disable the ambient-light sensor if it is changing the picture in a way you dislike.
- Try a more accurate picture mode such as Movie or Filmmaker, if available.
Controls and results vary across models. RTINGS’ HDR brightness testing guide explains how HDR luminance behavior differs from a simple brightness setting. Its LG C4 OLED calibration example also illustrates how settings can differ between SDR and HDR and change automatically when HDR content starts.

Automatic brightness control (ABC) uses room-light information to adjust display output. ENERGY STAR notes that this type of feature can support energy efficiency. Some viewers may prefer a fixed picture, however, if automatic changes are distracting during a program. Check your TV’s picture or energy-saving menus for an ambient-light or automatic-brightness option; the exact label and location vary.

Does setting brightness low protect your eyes?
The sources cited here do not establish a universal health-based brightness threshold or show that setting a TV to its lowest level prevents eye strain. Room lighting is relevant to perceived comfort, but the available figures do not prescribe a medically optimal setting for an individual. Adjust the screen for a comfortable, visible picture rather than aiming for the minimum.
