Should Your Keyboard Be Raised or Flat? How to Choose

A flat keyboard is a useful starting point, but the right tilt depends on your arm position and workstation. Set height and angle to keep wrists straight.

Neither raised nor flat is best for everyone. Start with the keyboard level, then adjust its tilt and height until your hands, wrists, and forearms stay straight and roughly parallel to the floor while you type. Raising the keyboard’s rear feet creates a positive tilt that can bend wrists upward; a slight negative tilt may reduce that bend for some people. The right setup depends on your arm position and workstation, not a universal ideal angle.

What do raised, flat, and negative tilt mean?

  • Raised at the back (positive tilt): The keyboard’s rear edge sits higher than its front. Pop-up feet usually create this angle, which can make the wrists bend upward, especially when the keyboard is high relative to the elbows.
  • Flat: The keyboard is level. This is a practical starting point because it adds no positive slope; it may work well if your desk and arm position let your wrists remain straight.
  • Negative tilt: The front edge is higher than the back. This may reduce wrist extension for some typists, but the goal is neutral wrists—not the steepest possible angle.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises keeping hands, wrists, and forearms straight, in-line, and roughly parallel to the floor. It notes that keyboard tilt may need adjustment to preserve neutral wrists as arm angles change, and cautions that a rear-up tilt can cause the wrists to bend upward. OSHA also says there is no single workstation arrangement that suits everyone. OSHA keyboard guidance

What studies say about keyboard slope

Laboratory studies generally found less wrist extension as keyboard slope moved from positive toward flat or negative. These results describe wrist posture during typing; they do not establish that a particular angle prevents injury or relieves pain.

Study Observed posture result What to take from it
Simoneau and Marklin, Human Factors (2001) Across slopes from +15° to −15°, mean wrist extension fell by 13°, from 22° to 9°. The study included 30 participants and also varied keyboard height. Slope and keyboard height can affect measured wrist posture; the result is not a clinical prescription.
Powers, Hedge, and Martin, Ergonomics (1995) Average wrist extension was 13° with a conventional setup and −1° with a negative-slope support. Participants selected an average support declination of 12° below horizontal. A negative-slope support changed measured posture in this typing study; its selected angle is not a universal target.
Applied Ergonomics (2003), 16 experienced typists Wrist extension decreased from approximately 12° at +7.5° slope to 3° of flexion at −15°. The authors said implications for reducing or preventing injuries had not been established.

How to set up and test your keyboard

  1. Set your body position: Sit or stand with shoulders relaxed and elbows close to your body. Adjust keyboard height so your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor.
  2. Begin with the keyboard flat: Type briefly and notice whether your wrists stay straight or bend upward or downward.
  3. Change tilt only as needed: Adjust the feet or use a support if it helps maintain straight wrists. If the rear feet push your wrists upward, lower them or try a flatter position.
  4. Check the whole workstation: Consider desk and chair height along with keyboard tilt. If raising your chair to reach the desk leaves your feet unsupported, OSHA recommends supporting your feet.
  5. Reassess during ordinary use: Comfort and alignment matter over your usual typing, not just in a brief check. Change posture and take breaks during prolonged computer work.

If you cannot keep your wrists straight with the keyboard’s available settings, changing keyboard height or trying an adjustable support is a reasonable experiment. It is not a guaranteed treatment for pain or a proven way to prevent injury.

How to decide which tilt works for you

Compare setups by checking four things while you type: whether your wrists bend upward or downward, how high the keyboard is relative to your elbows, whether your forearms remain roughly parallel to the floor, and whether the position feels comfortable during ordinary use. A flat keyboard is a useful baseline; try a slight negative tilt if your wrists still extend upward. Stop adjusting once the alignment is neutral and comfortable—there is no evidence here for a universal ideal angle or a long-term health advantage for one tilt.
