Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUpgrade RAM first if your computer repeatedly runs short of memory during the work you care about. Upgrade storage first if it still boots from a mechanical hard drive, or if there is too little room for Windows, apps, and files. If neither pattern fits, diagnose the slowdown before buying parts: there is no universal winner, and another cause may be responsible.
What RAM and storage do—and why the distinction matters
RAM is the computer’s working memory for apps and data in use. Storage holds Windows, apps, and files when the computer is off. Microsoft explains that “RAM is faster than disks at reading and writing information,” but the two components solve different problems: extra RAM does not create file-storage space, and a larger SSD does not give apps more working memory. Microsoft’s memory guide also gives broad workload-based RAM recommendations, rather than a guarantee that a particular upgrade will fix a particular slowdown.

How to tell which upgrade is more likely to help
Look for a repeated pattern while doing the tasks that feel slow, rather than relying on a single impression. Microsoft lists longer startup, low storage, and consistently high CPU, memory, or disk use among signs of performance trouble. Its PC performance and health guidance and Windows performance guide recommend investigating multiple causes.

| What you notice | First thing to investigate | What it may mean |
|---|---|---|
| Slowing when many browser tabs or apps are open, or during large photo/video projects or virtual machines | Memory use during that workload; identify memory-heavy processes | RAM may be the constraint if memory stays heavily committed while the slowdown occurs. |
| Slow boot and app launches on a mechanical hard drive | Whether the system drive is an HDD or SSD | An HDD-to-SSD replacement may address sluggish startup and launches. |
| Low-space warnings or not enough room for updates, apps, and files | Storage settings and what can safely be freed | More storage capacity may be needed; freeing space safely may help without replacing the drive. |
| Slowdowns without persistent memory pressure, an HDD, or low space | CPU use, startup and background apps, software, network, malware, heat, and overall system age or limits | Neither upgrade may solve the underlying problem. |
High memory use by itself does not prove that adding RAM will improve every task. Windows also uses virtual memory: Microsoft notes that a full page-file usage percentage alone does not indicate a performance problem. Do not disable the page file or treat any disk activity as proof that RAM is the bottleneck. Microsoft’s page-file guidance explains that distinction.

When a RAM upgrade is the better first move
Prioritize RAM when memory pressure recurs during important work and the machine becomes less responsive as you open or use more applications. Check which processes are consuming memory, close or adjust unnecessary ones, and observe whether the problem persists during the workload you want to improve.
Microsoft’s general guidance says at least 4 GB for primarily web browsing, documents, or streaming; recommends 8 GB for longer-term use; and says 16 GB or more may fit photo/video editing or other high-performance projects. These are broad recommendations, not a benchmark or proof that moving to any one capacity will cure a specific slowdown. See Microsoft’s memory guidance.

When an SSD upgrade is the better first move
If the computer boots from a mechanical HDD, replacing it with an SSD is the more relevant storage change to consider for slow startup and app launches. That is different from replacing one SSD with another SSD that uses a faster interface: a SATA-to-NVMe change is useful only if the computer supports it and the workload benefits. Do not assume a fixed speed gain without a device-specific test. Crucial’s drive categories include SATA and NVMe products, and its upgrade guidance notes that performance depends on the original computer and the selected product.
For low storage, first check whether files or apps can be removed or moved safely. If capacity remains inadequate, a larger compatible drive may be appropriate. Before a drive replacement or migration, back up important files and follow the computer maker’s instructions; Microsoft includes backing up a Windows PC in its PC health guidance.

Check compatibility before buying either part
Upgradeability depends on the exact computer, not just the general product category. Verify the model and consult its maker’s specifications or service manual. For RAM, check whether it is soldered or replaceable, the supported memory type and maximum capacity, and the available slots. For an SSD, check the supported form factor, interface, and whether the drive can be replaced.
Crucial’s System Scanner can help identify compatible upgrades, but confirm supported specifications with the computer maker as well. Its upgrade page provides additional compatibility guidance. Do not choose a component until you have identified the exact PC and confirmed it supports that part.

Compare the two options against your actual need
| Decision factor | RAM upgrade | SSD or storage upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Likely bottleneck | Repeated memory pressure during a relevant workload | Mechanical-drive latency or insufficient storage capacity |
| Tasks most directly related | Multitasking and large in-memory projects | Booting, opening apps, file transfers, or needing more space |
| Compatibility checks | Memory type, capacity limit, slots, and whether RAM is replaceable | Drive capacity, form factor, interface, and whether replacement is supported |
| Installation consideration | Check the maker’s service procedure and whether the memory is accessible | Plan for migration or an operating-system reinstall; back up first and follow maker instructions |
Choose capacity for the workload you actually have, not an unsupported maximum or an assumed speed gain. If both upgrades seem plausible, prioritize the bottleneck that appears repeatedly in the affected tasks, then weigh compatibility, cost, useful capacity, and installation risk.
When neither upgrade is the right answer yet
Slow performance can also come from startup or background apps, CPU load, network problems, software, malware, thermal issues, or aging hardware. Check these possibilities before spending money. Microsoft’s Windows performance steps address several potential causes; persistent high CPU, memory, or disk use is a reason to investigate, not by itself a diagnosis of which component to replace.
