Game Pass can cost less when you use enough included games during the months you pay, but its access depends on an active subscription and each title staying in the catalog. Compare the cost of the specific games you replay with the subscription cost for the same period.
How to compare the costs fairly
- Choose your replay list. Write down the games you actually return to and the platform you play them on.
- Check eligibility. Confirm that each title is currently included in the Game Pass plan you would use, in your region and on your platform. Catalog membership varies by time, region, plan, and platform.
- Count every paid month. Multiply the plan’s regular monthly price by the number of months you expect to keep access. Do not use an introductory offer as the ongoing price: subscriptions renew unless canceled, and a promotion may roll into the then-current regular price.
- Add the purchase prices. Compare against the current prices of the same replay games. Count a sale or member discount only if it is available to you when you buy.
- Value other benefits honestly. Include other Game Pass games or plan benefits only if you would genuinely use them. An expansive catalog is not savings by itself.
Formula: subscription cost for the period = monthly plan price × paid months. Compare that total with the sum of the current purchase prices for your replay list. This compares costs over a chosen period; it is not a perfect lifetime-ownership comparison.

The official Xbox US listing showed these monthly prices and catalog descriptions when checked on October 4, 2026. Prices may differ by region, taxes, eligibility for introductory offers, and future changes; confirm the current Xbox Game Pass plans before calculating.

When buying games is cheaper—or a better fit
For a short list of familiar replay games, add their current purchase prices and compare that total with the subscription cost over the months you would keep paying. If the games you want are not in your eligible catalog, a subscription does not replace buying them. Buying is also the more dependable option when continued access to those particular titles matters: Xbox describes Game Pass access as lasting only while the subscription is active and the title remains in the library. A purchase is subject to its purchase and license terms, so it should not be described as unconditional ownership.
When Game Pass can cost less
Game Pass can be the cheaper choice when the included games you will actually play during your paid months are worth more to you than the subscription total. This depends on the plan and platform, the titles currently in the catalog, and how much you use other included games. Do not divide the monthly fee by the catalog’s game count or count titles you would never play as savings.

Include access changes and renewal in the calculation
Xbox says access ends when a subscription is canceled or expires, or when a game leaves the library. Its catalog identifies games leaving soon and says members can buy a departing title to keep playing; the page displayed a discount of up to 20% for those purchases when checked. That is a conditional member discount, not a universal saving, so verify the game’s status and your available discount on the Xbox Game Pass catalog.

A practical decision rule
- Lean toward buying when your replay list is small, the purchase total is lower for your intended time horizon, or you want access that does not depend on subscription status and catalog membership.
- Lean toward Game Pass when the right plan includes several games you will play during the paid months and their value to you exceeds the subscription total.
- Recalculate when a title leaves, a sale changes a purchase price, your plan or platform changes, or your subscription renews at a different rate.
There is no reliable population-wide savings figure that settles this choice: the result turns on your titles, prices, platform, actual usage, and paid months.
