Transfer a utility account if the provider serves both your current and new addresses and can schedule the move you need. If it cannot serve the destination, stop service at your old home and arrange a new account with the provider that does. Check each service separately: electricity, gas, water and sewer, trash, internet, cable, security, and telephone may follow different rules.
How to decide: transfer, or stop and start service?
“Transfer” is not a guaranteed switch that automatically moves every utility account to a new address. Ask each provider whether it serves your destination and what its move process actually does. Some may transfer service; others may require a stop request for the old address and a separate start request for the new one. What to do before, during, and after the move
- List the accounts you pay for. Check bills or account portals for electricity, gas, water and sewer, trash, internet, cable, security, and telephone service. In a rental, review the lease and ask the property manager which services are included or centrally managed. - Contact each provider about the destination address. Ask whether it serves that exact address, whether it offers a move or transfer process, and whether you need a separate start request. If it does not serve the new home, contact the destination provider instead.
- Set dates to match your move and responsibility. Choose the old service end date based on when you stop being responsible for the home, while allowing for any move-out cleaning or other work that needs service. Arrange new-home service early enough for your move-in. Internet or cable may need an appointment; availability and lead times depend on the provider and address, so ask for current scheduling options. See USMove.org’s utility timing guidance.
- Ask whether you can keep both homes active temporarily. If you need power, water, or another service at both places while moving, ask the provider whether it permits an overlap, what the start and stop dates will be, and how both addresses will be billed. Consumers Energy says a transfer within its territory may leave power or gas on at both addresses during an overlap; that is an example of one provider’s process, not a rule for all utilities.
- Document the old account’s closure. Where applicable, ask for a final meter reading. Give the outgoing provider a forwarding address for the closing bill, and keep the stop-request date, confirmation, and contact details. Check the final bill against your notes. Questions to ask each provider
Before you confirm a move request, get clear answers for that account rather than assuming one provider’s policy applies to another.

- Does the company serve my exact new address?
- Do I need a transfer, or separate stop and start requests?
- What dates will service end at the old home and begin at the new one?
- Can the old and new addresses both stay active during the move, and how will that affect billing?
- Does the new service require equipment, a technician, or an appointment?
- Is the service already included in rent or managed by the property?
- How do I provide a final reading, receive the closing bill, and confirm the old account is closed?
What varies—and what you should verify
Coverage, transfer procedures, overlap, and installation requirements depend on the utility, provider, address, and sometimes the building’s rental arrangements. Do not assume that a provider serves a nearby address or that a plan follows you when you move. The available guidance does not establish a universal notice period, cancellation fee, deposit rule, or final-bill deadline. Ask each provider for its current terms; for local consumer protections, consult the relevant regulator.
