Use a local fuel-price finder such as Gaspy to compare stations near you, choosing the fuel grade your vehicle needs. Before making a detour, weigh the listed price against travel distance and any discount you can actually use—and check the pump price when you arrive. Gaspy prices are crowd-sourced and can change quickly, so treat listings as leads rather than guarantees.
Find nearby stations with a fuel-price app
- Open Gaspy and allow location access, or search the area where you plan to buy fuel. Gaspy describes its service as a way to find cheaper fuel in your area. Gaspy
- Select the fuel grade your vehicle uses. Gaspy says 91 is common around the country. Its Premium selection displays both 95 and 98, so check the specific grade listed before comparing prices. Gaspy Help
- Set a useful search radius. Gaspy says its normal maximum radius is 20 km and that you can change it in Settings. If no stations appear, check your grade selection, switch off optional coffee or toilet filters, or increase the radius. You can also report a missing station to Gaspy. Gaspy Help
Compare the real cost, not just the lowest listed price
Compare stations offering the same grade, then consider the price per litre alongside how far you would need to drive, whether you qualify for a discount, and how recently the price was confirmed. A cheaper listing may not make a worthwhile stop if reaching it adds a long detour or you cannot claim the discount associated with it.

- Match the grade: a lower price for a different fuel grade is not a like-for-like comparison.

- Verify the price at the pump: Gaspy’s New Zealand App Store listing cautions that some Gull pump prices are four cents below the board price. The board price is therefore not always the price you will pay at the pump. Gaspy on the App Store
- Count only discounts you can use: compare the amount you are actually eligible to pay, rather than assuming a promotion applies to everyone.
Why a listing may not be current or complete
Gaspy says its prices are crowd-sourced: motorists locate and share prices for other drivers. The service reports thousands of retail observations daily, coverage of more than 1,700 stations over time, and price history dating back to November 2015. Gaspy’s New Zealand App Store listing describes the app as free to use with in-app purchases and says it is available in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Use official price data for national context
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) publishes weekly monitoring of national average prices and retail importer margins for regular petrol, premium petrol and diesel, based on the previous week’s data. This can help put broader price movements in context, but it does not rank nearby stations in real time. MBIE also warns that it does not warrant the data as current, accurate or complete. MBIE’s methodology starts its adjusted retail price with the national average board price advertised at fuel stations, then applies an adjustment to align the measure with Stats NZ’s CPI fuel-price series. The Commerce Commission also publishes frequent fuel-monitoring reports. Its retail pricing information comes from a third-party provider using crowd-sourced prices, and the Commission warns that the retail reporting uses different sources and periods from its quarterly reports; the two are not directly comparable.
