What “Questionable” means—and what it doesn’t

Availability and fantasy value are separate questions. First ask whether the back is likely to play; then ask whether his expected role, if active, is valuable enough for your lineup. The tag alone does not establish that he will get his usual workload.

How to make the game-day decision
- Check the latest status. Follow current team news and the official inactive announcement. NFL Fantasy says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before the scheduled game when they cannot play. Treat that as an approximate checking window, not a guarantee that all useful information will arrive at an exact time. See NFL Fantasy’s Auto-Swap Inactives guidance.
- Compare him with your actual replacement. Consider your league’s scoring, projected touches and role, matchup, and any credible indication of a workload limit. The relevant question is not whether the questionable back is generally talented, but whether he is a better choice than the player you can actually start. NFL Fantasy’s running-back start/sit coverage addresses weekly lineup choices; it does not supply a projection for every player or league.
- Preserve a substitution option if you can. Where your league’s rules allow, put a late-playing uncertain player in a flexible slot and keep a replacement whose game has not started. Check your platform’s substitution rules. NFL Fantasy documents an Auto-Swap Inactives option, but it is platform-specific; verify whether it is available and how it behaves in your app.
- Weigh the downside of waiting. Waiting can preserve upside when the back is valuable and a suitable later replacement is available. The risk rises if your backup plays earlier, is weak, or cannot be substituted after kickoff. If a healthy alternative has a comparable role, choosing that player may reduce the chance of being left with little or no production.
- Recheck before the lineup locks. A player can remain a game-time decision close to kickoff. Use current-week reporting and the official inactive information rather than relying on an old example; the NFL’s Week 3 of 2026 pregame injury coverage illustrates how late reports and inactive outcomes are handled, but its player-specific news applies to those games only.
Compare the two choices on the factors that matter
- Availability: What is the latest authoritative status, and how current is the report?
- Workload if active: What role and touch volume seem plausible, and is there a credible sign of a limitation?
- Risk and upside: How costly would an inactive player or reduced workload be compared with the alternative’s likely contribution?
- Lineup context: Does your scoring format or roster slot change the comparison?
- Substitution window: Does your replacement play later, and will your league platform still let you make the swap?
These are decision criteria, not player-specific projections. Without a named back, opponent, league format, and replacement, there is no evidence-based universal start-or-sit call.

Use a practical rule of thumb
Start the questionable back when his expected role and upside are worth the risk, the alternatives are weaker, and you have a realistic way to respond to late news. Lean toward the healthier option when the back’s workload is uncertain and a comparable alternative is available—or when your lineup could be stranded without a replacement. For a specific call, check current-week team news, official inactive information, your scoring and substitution rules, and the players actually on your roster.
