There is no single store for every classic game. Your best legal option depends on the title, region, and device: check Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus Premium, Xbox Game Pass or Xbox’s newer PC backward-compatibility listings, and licensed PC storefronts such as GOG. Before paying, verify whether you are buying a game, borrowing access through a subscription, or streaming it—and whether the exact edition works on your system.
Start by identifying the game and access you want
“Classic” is not a consistent technical category. A title may be an original release, an emulated version, a compilation, a remaster, or a newer game with retro styling. There is no universal classic-games catalog: publishers and licensing, platform support, region, and edition all affect availability.

Search the exact title in your platform’s local store or service catalog, then check its product or listing page. The main routes differ in what you receive:
- Individual purchase: You buy a license for a specified platform or edition. Check that the listing supports the device you intend to use.
- Subscription access: You can play while the title remains in the catalog and your membership is active. A game may leave the catalog.
- Streaming: The game runs remotely rather than as a local download. Availability can depend on the title, device, subscription tier, and streaming requirements.
Where to find classic games by platform
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo Switch Online classic games are accessed through Nintendo Classics apps on eShop, not as individual purchases of the service games. The standard membership includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy libraries. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, and Virtual Boy; its GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s live catalog for the exact title and compatible system before joining.

- The Expanded Collection: Play through multiple different versions of the beloved Aladdin, The Lion King, and The Jungle Book games that have been created over the years, including both console and handheld versions.
- BOTH 16-Bit Console Aladdin Games included for the first time since their original release. By popular demand, two completely different and equally adored Aladdin games are finally available and enhanced for modern consoles.
- Modern Features: Rewind any of the games in real-time to retry difficult areas, view full game playthroughs with the ability to skip forward, start playing at any point, and save your progress and continue your adventure wherever and whenever you want.
- Museum Features: Take a journey behind-the-scenes and learn more about the creation of these incredible games. Watch video interviews with the original development teams or explore "
- Display Options and Updated Visuals: 1080P graphics and enhancements for modern HD TVs Adjustable screen aspect ratios and borders Custom filter options designed to replicate classic CRT TVs and other popular screen types"
Nintendo says you can access these games while the relevant membership is active, and that it has no plans to sell the service games outside Nintendo Switch Online. Offline play requires periodic internet reconnection to validate membership. Nintendo does not set a fixed schedule for new additions, so the catalog can grow without a predictable release timetable. The cited catalog page is for Canada; check your local eShop because availability and service terms can vary by country.
PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC streaming
PlayStation Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog offers a mix of downloadable and streamable titles. Sony says a wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only. Premium streaming is available on PS4, PS5, and PC, subject to requirements and title eligibility; this does not mean every catalog game can be played on every device or downloaded.

Catalog membership changes over time, and Sony lists removal dates for some games. Confirm that the title is currently available, whether it downloads or streams on your intended device, and that your local subscription tier includes it. The linked Sony page is for the United States, so its catalog and terms should not be assumed to apply in other regions.

Xbox console, PC, and supported cloud devices
Xbox Game Pass Retro Classics is a subscription collection developed with Antstream Arcade. In its 2025 announcement, Microsoft described a launch collection of more than 50 classic Activision games from the 1980s and 1990s, playable through Xbox console, the Xbox PC app, and supported cloud devices. Microsoft said the collection would expand; check the app for its current titles and your device’s support.

Xbox also announced an individual-purchase route for some original Xbox games on PC. On July 22, 2026, Microsoft said its early-release PC backward-compatibility program launched with four games: BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy. Microsoft said these games were available for individual purchase on PC and included with all Xbox Game Pass plans; existing digital console licenses for those titles carried over to PC. This was a four-game launch group, not evidence that the full Xbox classics catalog is available on PC. Check the current PC listing, region, and supported devices before buying.
Windows PC storefronts
GOG’s Classic category is one place to browse older PC releases. Examples listed include Deus Ex GOTY Edition, Nox, Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete, Fallout, Fallout 2, and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind GOTY Edition. The category is neither an exhaustive list nor a guarantee that a particular game is available. GOG’s separate Retro category also includes remasters, reissues, and newer retro-styled games. Read the individual product page for the edition and operating-system details; category labels alone do not establish compatibility.

Compare the exact options before paying
If a title appears on more than one service, compare what each listing actually provides rather than treating every “classic” option as equivalent.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Access model | Distinguish an individual purchase from active-subscription access or streaming. They do not offer the same kind of access. |
| Platform and edition | Confirm the console generation or PC operating-system requirements, and whether the listing is an original release, emulated version, compilation, or remaster. |
| Availability and permanence | A subscription title can leave a catalog, while subscription access generally requires an active membership. For a purchase, verify that the license is for the platform you plan to use. |
| Region and tier | Catalogs, subscription tiers, and streaming eligibility can differ by country. Check your local store and the tier required for the specific game. |
| Practical requirements | Check download space, internet needs, supported controller or input, and any streaming limitations. Nintendo displays required storage in eShop; it suggests compatible microSD storage if space is insufficient and specifies microSD Express for Switch 2. |
| Total cost over time | Compare a one-time purchase with the recurring subscription cost for the period you expect to play. Do not compare subscription access with a purchase as though they were the same product. |
What to verify right before checkout
- Search the exact title in the store or service for your country.
- Open the specific game listing and confirm the edition, supported system, and whether it is a download or stream.
- For subscription access, check the required tier, active-membership condition, and any catalog removal notice.
- For streaming, confirm that the title and your device are eligible and review the service’s connection requirements.
- Compare the one-time price or recurring subscription cost against how long you expect to play.
Availability, prices, licensing, and system support can change. The official service pages do not establish one definitive worldwide list of legally available classic games, so confirm the current listing for your region rather than relying on a category name or an older catalog roundup.
