Start a new world if you want the cleanest, developer-recommended Valheim 1.0 progression. You do not have to restart: your existing save remains playable, but new biome generation works correctly only in areas you had not explored before the update. Keep your old world if its builds, infrastructure and character progress matter more, and make a separate backup before loading it in 1.0.

The short answer
Iron Gate’s July 1, 2026 Valheim 1.0 FAQ gives two answers that sound contradictory but are not. Old worlds receive the new content and remain available, yet Iron Gate “always recommend[s] that you start the game over from scratch to get the best possible experience.” A restart is therefore a recommendation, not a requirement.

In an old save, biome generation works properly only in areas that were still unexplored when 1.0 arrived. Terrain and points of interest in regions you had already revealed will not be regenerated into the intended 1.0 layout. A new world gives the Deep North and the rest of the 1.0 progression a completely fresh map.
If you continue an existing save, your buildings, discovered infrastructure and current equipment remain where you left them. If you start over, you trade that investment for an untouched map, a renewed boss and gear progression, and the cleanest route through the release.

What Valheim 1.0 changes
Valheim 1.0 launched on September 9, 2026. Its defining addition is the Deep North, accompanied by new enemies, bases and weapons. The launch supports crossplay across PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
Those additions are delivered to an existing world, but delivery is not the same as complete regeneration. The Deep North or other new biome content can appear correctly beyond the boundary of what your old character had explored; land already generated before the update keeps its existing terrain. That distinction is why Iron Gate favors a new world even though it preserves backwards compatibility.

Choose a fresh world when the 1.0 journey matters most
You want untouched 1.0 terrain
A fresh seed removes uncertainty about where new biomes and structures can generate. Every region is created under the 1.0 rules rather than a mixture of pre-update and post-update terrain. This is the strongest reason to restart if discovering the Deep North is the point of returning.
You want to replay progression
Starting over restores the survival curve: gathering basic materials, defeating bosses, replacing early weapons and gradually opening later areas. An old character arriving with endgame equipment can bypass much of that loop. Restarting is appropriate when the challenge and pacing are more important than convenience.
You want a clean achievement attempt
Achievements began tracking from the 1.0 download. A kill recorded before that download is not retroactively credited; Iron Gate specifically notes that a prior Eikthyr kill does not satisfy the matching 1.0 achievement. Begin with a new world if you want your milestones to correspond unambiguously to the 1.0 run.

Your group can accept rebuilding
For a cooperative server, agree on the restart before anyone invests hundreds of hours in a shared base. A new map means replacing housing, farms, portals, resource stockpiles and transport routes. The benefit is that every player explores the new progression together instead of one person carrying an established arsenal into newly generated territory.

Keep the old world when your investment is the priority
Large builds remain valuable
Iron Gate says old saves remain where you left them and can continue to be played. That makes an existing world the sensible choice for elaborate castles, harbors, roads, farms or other construction you do not want to recreate. The update does not require you to abandon that work.
Use unexplored regions for new generation
When exploring an old save, head beyond the area your character had revealed before 1.0. Those unexplored regions are where the updated biome-generation rules can work properly. A map that was merely visited briefly may already count as explored, so do not assume that an attractive nearby location will be regenerated just because you never built there.
Immediate access can be an advantage
Keeping the old world lets you use existing equipment and infrastructure while you learn the new enemies and weapons. It is also practical for players who have limited play time and would rather reach the Deep North without repeating every earlier boss and technology step.
Understand what cannot be repaired by continuing
Loading an old save does not retroactively rebuild terrain that was already generated. If a pre-1.0 region has the wrong layout for your plans, moving farther away is the reliable answer; waiting, reloading or revisiting the same area will not turn it into a new seed.

Back up before your first 1.0 load
Do this even if you intend to keep playing the old world. Iron Gate’s Steam announcement documented an early save-format conversion issue: some item stands and armour stands lost durability or upgrade data while being converted. Patch 1.0.12 fixed the conversion process going forward, and the developers identified restoring a backup as the workaround for an affected save.
- Exit Valheim completely. Do not create the backup while the game is still writing the world.
- Make a separate copy of the world save. Store it outside the live save location and, preferably, on another drive or cloud-storage service. Keep the pre-1.0 copy unchanged.
- Record which character and world belong together. Give the backup a date-based name so you can identify the correct version if you need to restore it.
- Load the world once in 1.0. Check item stands, armour stands and any other displays that contain upgraded or durable equipment before investing further time.
- Restore only if necessary. If conversion damaged data, close the game, replace the converted save with your untouched copy, and update to a build that includes the 1.0.12 conversion fix before trying again.
Keep the backup until you have verified the world on the platform and patch you use. A cloud-sync copy that has already been overwritten is not a dependable pre-update backup.
Achievements, cheats and mods
Achievement eligibility
Achievement tracking starts with the 1.0 download, so an older world is not automatically disqualified. However, progress earned before that point is not necessarily credited, as the Eikthyr example shows. If achievements are important, begin the run after updating and avoid assuming that earlier boss kills will satisfy 1.0 requirements.
Most cheats permanently flag a character or world against achievements. Decide whether you are pursuing achievements before enabling commands or other cheat functions; turning them off later does not reliably clear the flag.

Mod compatibility
Iron Gate has no official mod support and cannot guarantee that mods will work with 1.0. A restart does not solve a broken mod, because the compatibility issue is with the updated game and mod code rather than with the age of the world. Test a mod-dependent setup on a disposable copy first, and keep an unmodified backup for recovery.

Consoles have no mod support or Steam Workshop. If your group includes console players, plan around the unmodded 1.0 game regardless of what is installed on a PC.

Solo player returning mainly for the Deep North
Start fresh. You receive the complete 1.0 map and can experience new enemies, bases and weapons without wondering whether nearby terrain was generated under older rules.
Builder with a long-running home world
Keep the existing world and back it up before conversion. Explore outward into genuinely unexplored territory for new generation, while treating the established base as a permanent legacy area.
Friends starting together after a long break
Start a new shared world if everyone wants the same progression. Keep the old server available as an archive so returning players can visit their previous builds without forcing the group to choose between preservation and a clean run.
Player who wants achievements but also owns a valuable base
Use two worlds: preserve the old save for construction and equipment, and create a separate uncheated 1.0 world for achievement progression. This avoids deleting your work while keeping the achievement run easy to audit.
Mod-dependent PC player
Do not make the world decision until your essential mods are confirmed to work with 1.0. Keep a vanilla backup and expect to play without mods if an update breaks them. Console players should assume vanilla play because mods and Workshop are unavailable there.

Yes. Valheim does not require a single all-or-nothing choice. Retain the pre-1.0 world as your construction and legacy save, then create a separate 1.0 world for exploration and achievements. This is the lowest-risk plan for players who want to see the new content properly without discarding years of building.
Label the saves clearly, back up both before major updates, and decide in advance which world is allowed to use cheats or experimental mods. Keeping those purposes separate prevents an achievement run from being permanently flagged and makes troubleshooting much easier.
Bottom line
A new world is the best choice for the intended Valheim 1.0 experience, especially if the Deep North, fresh generation and a clean progression or achievement run are your priorities. It is not mandatory: old saves remain playable, and your builds and equipment stay intact. If you keep one, explore beyond pre-update territory and protect the save with a separate backup before its first 1.0 conversion.
