Spoilers for the Contract: Woodland Beast. Killing the Scoia’tael and reporting the result earns 30 Crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct. If you spare them, you can conceal what happened and receive experience, or report them to the captain and receive the letter without the Crowns. The encounter and the report are two separate choices.
What is really behind the “beast” attacks?
Geralt investigates attacks on transports expecting a monster contract, but the trail leads to Scoia’tael partisans. You can fight the group or let them go. Once you spare them, the quest still asks what you will tell the Redanian captain; sparing them does not force you to lie.
What does each choice give you?

The letter is the practical reward that permits crossing the Pontar and traveling to Oxenfurt, as described by the Gamer Guides walkthrough. The 30-Crown payment applies to the kill-and-report route, not the spare-and-report route.
Which route should you choose?
Choose based on what matters to you: sparing the partisans, being candid with the captain, or taking the stated Crowns reward. If you want the letter while sparing the Scoia’tael, report them; if you want to avoid turning them in, conceal what you found and accept that this route has no stated money or letter reward.

The available walkthroughs establish these contract rewards and branches, but do not establish a wider main-story consequence such as changing the war’s outcome or later main-quest events. The Official Witcher Wiki also describes the spare/kill and report/deny branches: Contract: Woodland Beast.
