There is no universally accepted number of cognitive tasks. To count them, define the activity and purpose, identify the mental work behind each step, and state how you grouped it. The result is a transparent, task-specific inventory—not a fixed taxonomy of the mind.
What does it mean to count cognitive tasks?
It means identifying and enumerating the mental activities involved in a defined activity. A person’s visible actions do not reveal all the knowledge, goals, strategies, and decisions behind their performance. Cognitive task analysis (CTA) is used to make that less-visible work explicit. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) describes CTA as capturing “decisionmaking, reasoning, and how information is processed.”
For example, following an on-screen instruction may involve noticing a prompt, remembering a rule, interpreting what it means, choosing an action, and checking the result. Those might be recorded as separate steps, grouped as broader processes, or treated as subtasks within one larger task. The count changes with the chosen level of detail.
Is there a standard list or number of cognitive tasks?
No. The sources offer frameworks and analyses tailored to particular activities, not one agreed list or universal count. The National Academies’ chapter on CTA describes developing task taxonomies for the job being analyzed. Its authors also note that contextual knowledge matters: what a person knows about the situation, tools, and procedures can shape how the task is performed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cognitive categories are not necessarily exclusive. The National Institute of Mental Health’s RDoC report observes that “many cognitive constructs overlap (for example, working memory and cognitive control), and this is the nature of cognition and to some extent unavoidable.” A single step may therefore draw on several processes. Decide whether your inventory counts observable mental actions, broader processes, goals, decisions, or subtasks, and explain that choice.
How to make a practical inventory
- Set the boundary and purpose. Name the activity, the setting, whose work you are analyzing, and why. An inventory for training may need different detail from one intended to improve an interface or document a workflow.
- Map the observable steps. Record what happens in sequence before assigning mental labels. Note relevant tools, information, and other people involved.
- Ask what each step requires mentally. For each action, consider what the person must notice, remember, interpret, decide, retrieve, or plan. Record uncertainty rather than forcing an answer where the evidence is unclear.
- Group only after recording details. Combine related items under a named scheme, such as broad cognitive processes or task-specific subtasks. Allow a step to involve more than one process.
- Check the inventory where feasible. Ask another observer or a participant familiar with the activity to review it. Report how the list was produced and what its boundaries leave out.
How to capture the hidden mental work
AHRQ’s applied guidance recommends defining the process, choosing a way to capture information, developing a collection instrument, observing or interviewing, and analyzing the results. Observation can show actions and context; interviews can help explain reasoning that is not visible. Which method is useful depends on the activity and the purpose of the inventory.

Interviews have limits: people may struggle to describe their own thought processes, and coaching them can bias what they report. Treat explanations as evidence to interpret, not as a complete record of cognition. The National Academies chapter likewise emphasizes analyzing procedural and contextual knowledge and cautions that CTA methods need careful development and empirical application. It concludes: “A need for the future is to develop a clear set of rules and practices for cognitive task analysis—at the present time it is more of an art than a science.”

What object-counting experiments do—and do not—show
Counting objects is a specific activity, not a way to establish how many kinds of cognitive task exist. In a 2025 experiment, Sabine Schaefer studied 54 young adults counting five color categories and reporting the counts at the end. Under cognitive load, error rates were lower in the embodied condition than in the look-only condition; no corresponding difference appeared in the no-load condition. That finding applies to the sample and setup studied. It does not supply a universal taxonomy or count of cognitive tasks.

The 2000 chapter by Chipman, Schraagen, and Shalin, Cognitive Task Analysis, describes CTA as extending traditional task analysis to reveal the knowledge, thought processes, and goal structures underlying observable performance. Its applications include system design, training, and competence assessment. AHRQ’s guidance is a practical starting point for applying the method.
