What the iPhone Duo offers in place of a small tablet
Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. It has a 5.4-inch outer display for phone use and a 7.6-inch inner display that opens for content, games and side-by-side apps. Apple’s product page also describes flexible viewing positions. That makes the Duo a plausible way to carry a larger screen without carrying a second device; it does not make it an iPad mini with a phone attached. Apple lists the Duo at 254 g, with OLED displays supporting ProMotion up to 120 Hz, storage options from 256 GB to 2 TB, an IP68 rating under IEC 60529 and a 48 MP Dual Fusion camera system. When the Duo can replace an iPad mini
Your tablet use is occasional and mostly for media
If you mainly read, watch video or play games on a small screen during commutes and downtime, the Duo’s larger unfolded display may cover enough of that use. The practical advantage is consolidation: one device to carry and keep charged, rather than a phone plus a tablet.

You want a phone first, not a tablet you happen to carry
The Duo remains your everyday phone. Its folded 5.4-inch outer display is the one you will use for quick phone tasks, while the 7.6-inch screen is available when you unfold it. This suits someone who wants a larger screen on demand but does not need a tablet available independently of their phone.
You can wait for availability and reassess the purchase
Apple says preorders start October 16, 2026, in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability beginning October 23 in initial markets. Additional markets are scheduled to begin October 30; rollout and local availability may vary. Those dates are still in the future as of October 5, 2026. When to keep the iPad mini in the running
- You need more working room. A 7.6-inch folding-phone display is larger than a conventional phone screen, but it is not evidence that every tablet task will feel as comfortable as it does on a dedicated tablet. If your reading, writing or other work depends on a larger canvas, compare the actual workflow rather than relying on the word “foldable.”
- You use tablet-specific workflows. If your routine depends on a dedicated tablet or you want one device for extended tablet sessions while keeping your phone separate, the Duo’s consolidation benefit may be a drawback rather than an advantage.
- You want to use a stylus now. Apple says Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later in 2026, including note-taking, sketching and document markup on either display. - You prefer to wait for long-term durability evidence. Apple’s launch materials describe the device and its specifications, but they do not establish real-world long-term hinge or display reliability. Someone uncomfortable buying a first-generation foldable before independent long-term evidence is available has a reason to wait.

Apple lists MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified charging compatibility. It also describes a Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand and a two-piece case. Those may help with charging or propping up the unfolded screen, but choose accessories by their stated compatibility rather than assuming any foldable-phone case will protect the hinge. - List what you actually do on the iPad mini. Separate occasional reading, video and gaming from work or routines that depend on a dedicated tablet.
- Ask whether one device is a benefit. If you want your phone and larger screen together, the Duo’s design addresses that preference. If you value having the tablet available separately, consolidation is not a substitute.
- Check the Duo as a phone. Consider its outer-screen use, camera, battery expectations, cellular needs and whether its folded form works for daily carrying—not only how the inner screen looks opened.
- Compare local prices and stock when sales begin. Apple’s cited product materials establish a release schedule, not a value comparison. Check the current price of the Duo and the phone-plus-tablet setup in your market.
- Revisit any feature you need at launch. In particular, verify the availability of Apple Pencil (USB-C) support and compatible accessories before treating them as part of your setup.
Verdict: the Duo is a conditional iPad mini substitute
Choose the iPhone Duo over an iPad mini if your tablet use is light, you want a larger screen attached to your phone, and you are comfortable with the trade-off of a phone-centered foldable. Keep a separate tablet in the plan if your work depends on a dedicated tablet workflow, or wait if you want long-term reliability evidence before buying a first-generation foldable. Apple’s published specifications explain what the Duo is designed to offer; they do not prove it replaces every small-tablet use.
