Overlapping protection can affect performance and may cause update, installation, stability, or restart problems. On Windows 10 and 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus normally turns off automatically when another antivirus is installed and enabled, then turns back on if that product is removed.
Why running two real-time antivirus products can cause problems
Real-time antivirus tools monitor files and activity as you use your PC. When multiple products perform overlapping work, they can compete for system resources or interfere with one another. Microsoft says this can affect performance and may lead to update or installation errors; it also warns of possible instability and unexpected restarts.

These are potential problems, not guaranteed outcomes. Microsoft does not quantify a typical slowdown or say that every combination will conflict. Nor does installing a second product always mean that two real-time engines remain active: on Windows 10 and 11, Defender generally yields when another antivirus is installed and turned on.

What happens to Microsoft Defender when you install another antivirus?
On Windows 10 and 11 client PCs, Microsoft says Defender Antivirus turns off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and turned on. If you uninstall that app, Defender turns back on. Defender is included in Windows 11 and in Windows 10 devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates after Windows 10 support ended.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 security documentation describes this automatic behavior. The practical point is to check that the replacement product is actually installed, enabled, and protecting the PC; do not deliberately leave Defender off without another working security product. Microsoft says Defender can turn back on if there is no other security product or the other product expires.

Can you keep a second scanner for occasional checks?
Yes, an on-demand scanner is different from a second continuously active antivirus. Microsoft says Microsoft Safety Scanner and Microsoft Defender Offline can coexist with real-time antivirus because they run only when you request or schedule a scan. That is not the same configuration as two products both providing ongoing real-time protection.

How to check whether two products are active
- Open Windows Security: select Start, search for “Windows Security,” and open the app.
- Check the antivirus provider: open Virus & threat protection and look for the security provider or protection status shown there. Labels can vary by Windows version and installed product.
- Confirm the other product is enabled: open its own app and verify that its real-time protection is on and its subscription or license has not expired.
- Remove unwanted overlap: if two third-party products appear to be active, decide which one you want to keep providing real-time protection and uninstall the other through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10). Restart if the uninstaller requests it, then check Windows Security again.
If the PC is managed by an employer or school, contact its administrator before changing security software. Managed devices may use configurations that differ from a personal PC.

Why two third-party antivirus apps are a different case
Windows’ automatic handoff explains the usual behavior between Defender and another enabled antivirus, but it does not guarantee that two products from other companies will coordinate in the same way. Microsoft warns that two third-party anti-malware apps may both try to run simultaneously. Its consumer guidance on protecting a PC from viruses discusses possible slowdown, instability, and unexpected restarts; that page identifies Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 as its applicability.
If you want features beyond built-in protection, choose a single compatible suite to provide real-time antivirus rather than adding another active engine. Consider the feature you need, compatibility with your Windows version and other security tools, and the product’s effect on performance. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that one commercial product is best or provide comparative detection-rate results.

Why business PCs and Windows Server need different advice
Managed Windows endpoints
Organizations may deliberately run Microsoft Defender Antivirus in passive mode alongside another active antimalware product. In passive mode, Defender does not provide active protection, remediation, or malware blocking; the active solution is responsible for those tasks. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance describes how mode depends on factors such as Windows version, the primary antivirus, and Defender for Endpoint onboarding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft advises organizations to avoid unnecessary overlap between tools with duplicate functions. Administrators can use delegation, passive mode, and carefully selected exclusions to reduce conflicts, but exclusions can reduce protection and do not guarantee that every interoperability issue will disappear. See Microsoft’s guidance on Defender for Endpoint alongside other security solutions for the managed-environment context.

Windows Server
Server behavior is not the same as the normal Windows 10 or 11 consumer handoff. Microsoft says Defender Antivirus does not automatically enter passive mode on covered Windows Server versions simply because a non-Microsoft antivirus is installed. Administrators may need to configure passive mode or disable or uninstall Defender, depending on the supported setup. Those are deployment decisions for server administrators, not steps home users should copy by editing system settings.
