“Obsolete” does not automatically mean unusable. Keep an older Apple device if it still receives the software and security updates your essential tasks require, works reliably, and can be repaired safely at a sensible cost. Replace it when critical apps or security updates no longer support it, hardware service and parts are unavailable, the battery or other components are unsafe, or repair and downtime approach the cost of a suitable replacement.
Apple’s status applies to a specific model and is based on when Apple last distributed it, so check the exact model and your region before deciding.

What Apple means by “vintage” and “obsolete”
Apple’s labels describe service eligibility, not a guarantee that a device has stopped working. Apple says owners may obtain service and parts for at least five years after a product was last distributed, potentially up to seven years depending on parts availability and applicable law. A product is vintage when Apple stopped distributing it more than five years but less than seven years ago. A product is obsolete when Apple stopped distributing it more than seven years ago.
For obsolete products, Apple discontinues all hardware service and service providers cannot order obsolete-product parts. Mac laptops can sometimes receive battery-only repair for up to 10 years after last distribution, but that exception is still subject to parts availability. Vintage service is also not guaranteed: a provider must have the required parts.

Apple describes a network of more than 5,000 Apple-certified repair locations, but that general network statement does not mean every obsolete model receives current operating-system updates or can be repaired.
Make the decision in this order
- Confirm the exact model and status. Record the model name, year, storage, cellular or Wi-Fi version, and serial number. Check Apple’s current vintage and obsolete list and ask an Apple or authorized provider whether the specific part you need is available.
- Check software and security support. Verify that the device can run the operating system and security updates required for banking, work, school, identity verification, accessibility, and your essential apps.
- Test your real workload. Make calls, authenticate, use the camera, connect required peripherals, open work files, and test accessibility features rather than relying on a benchmark or a short setup session.
- Inspect battery and physical safety. Look for swelling, unusual heat, damaged casing, unreliable charging, or a battery that shuts the device down unexpectedly.
- Price repair against replacement. Include parts, labor, shipping, accessories, data migration, downtime, and any trade-in credit—not only the repair invoice.
- Choose a responsible end-of-life route. Back up and erase the device, then use a trade-in program or certified electronics recycling.
Security and app compatibility come first
When continued use is reasonable
Keeping the device is reasonable when it still receives the security fixes and operating-system versions needed by your important services. Confirm this directly in Settings and on each essential app’s current requirements. A phone that handles calls, two-factor authentication, banking, maps, and emergency contacts reliably may still be valuable even if it is no longer the newest model.
When lack of updates means replacement
Replacement is usually the safer choice when the device cannot install security updates, your bank or identity provider no longer supports its browser or operating system, or a required work or school app has stopped installing. Avoid treating a device as safe merely because it powers on: an unpatched operating system can leave known vulnerabilities unresolved, and an incompatible app can fail during authentication or emergency use.

Repair and parts: what the status changes
Vintage devices
A vintage device may still be serviceable, but parts availability controls the outcome. Ask for a written estimate for the exact model and fault. A provider may be able to replace a battery or display today and decline the same job later when inventory runs out.
Obsolete devices
Apple and its service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products, and Apple has discontinued hardware service for them. Independent repair shops may have reclaimed or third-party components, but quality, calibration, water resistance, warranty coverage, and data protection vary. If a repair depends on an unverified part or a complex board-level fix, include the risk of a second failure in your decision.
Mac battery-only exception
Some Mac laptops can qualify for battery-only repair for up to 10 years after last distribution, subject to parts availability. This does not restore full hardware service or make an old Mac compatible with current macOS releases. Confirm both battery eligibility and software support before paying for the repair.
Battery health, replacement and safety
Apple says rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan and may eventually need service or recycling. Built-in lithium-ion polymer batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized provider. If battery life is the only major defect, compare an exact-model battery service with the price of a replacement device.

Cycle figures are not a promise that every battery reaches exactly 80 percent. Heat, charging patterns, workload, age, and storage conditions affect results. Review the battery-health screen where available, but also watch for rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, or severe performance throttling.
Stop using a device with a swollen or damaged battery, overheating, a cracked battery area, or repeated charging failure. Do not mail or ship electronics with swollen, damaged, or defective batteries. Keep the device away from heat and combustible materials and ask a qualified provider about safe handling.

- Banking, passkeys, two-factor authentication, and government or health portals.
- Office, school, creative, or development software and the file formats you use.
- External displays, docks, printers, storage, hearing aids, and vehicle systems.
- Accessibility features such as VoiceOver, magnification, hearing-device support, and switch control.
- Storage capacity and backup reliability. A nearly full drive can cause crashes even when the processor is adequate.
Replace or retire the device when crashes corrupt data, charging is intermittent, storage errors recur, or a repair has already failed more than once. Reliability problems create hidden costs: missed work, emergency replacement, lost photos, and time spent recovering accounts.

Compare the total cost, not just the repair quote

As a practical rule, repair is attractive when one replaceable part fixes a device that still meets your software and performance needs. Replacement becomes more compelling when several components are failing, the repair has no dependable parts source, or the combined repair and downtime cost approaches a supported replacement.

Old iPhone
Keep it if security updates, banking, authentication, carrier service, and battery life remain adequate. A battery-only problem can favor service, provided the exact model is confirmed and the provider can install a safe battery. Replace it if essential apps no longer install, the operating system cannot receive needed security updates, or the battery is swollen or unreliable.
Obsolete MacBook
First separate battery eligibility from operating-system compatibility. A Mac may qualify for battery-only repair while still being unable to run the macOS version required by your work or security tools. If your workload is offline and stable, continued use may be practical; if you need current browsers, enterprise management, or security software, replacement is generally safer.

Check the apps used for school, point-of-sale work, video calls, reading, and accessibility. iPad apps can stop supporting an old operating system even when basic functions still work. A vintage iPad may be worth repairing for a child’s offline media or a dedicated control task, but do not rely on it for sensitive accounts if updates have ended.

Trade-in, erasure and recycling
- Back up photos, messages, files, authenticator data, and health information. Confirm that the backup can be restored.
- Transfer accounts and eSIM or cellular service to the replacement. Keep the old device powered until authentication works on the new one.
- Sign out of Apple Account services, disable Find My, and remove payment cards and device-management profiles.
- Erase all content and settings, then remove physical SIM cards and accessories you are keeping.
- Check Apple Trade In for eligibility and current regional value. Eligible devices can receive credit toward a new device or an Apple Gift Card.
- If there is no trade-in value, Apple says it will recycle the device and unused accessories securely and for free. Use an approved electronics recycler if Apple’s program is unavailable in your region.
Trade-in eligibility and values vary by condition, model, and country. A device with no credit can still have environmental value through recycling; do not put electronics or lithium batteries in household trash.
A quick decision checklist
- Keep: required updates and apps work; no safety defect; performance is sufficient; repair parts are available; and repair cost is comfortably below replacement cost.
- Repair first: the fault is isolated, such as a worn battery; the provider is qualified; and the repair does not leave you dependent on an unsupported operating system.
- Replace: essential security or app support has ended; Apple and qualified providers cannot service it; the battery is swollen, damaged or overheating; failures threaten data; or total repair cost and downtime approach replacement.
Make the choice for the device’s next job, not its age alone. An obsolete Apple product can remain a safe, useful secondary or offline device, but it should not be trusted with sensitive, update-dependent work once its software and hardware support no longer meet that requirement.
