Should You Pay in CAD or USD at a U.S. Merchant?

At a U.S. checkout, Canadian cardholders should usually decline the merchant’s CAD conversion and pay in USD, while checking their card’s own fees and terms.

For most Canadian cardholders, choose USD when a U.S. merchant offers to convert the purchase to CAD. Paying in USD avoids the merchant’s dynamic currency conversion (DCC) rate and markup; your card issuer or its processing arrangement then handles the conversion under your card’s terms. Check your card’s billing currency and foreign-transaction fees, since those can affect the final cost.

Should I pay in USD or CAD?

Usually, pay in USD and decline the merchant’s CAD conversion. Visa Canada says a merchant’s home-currency offer usually includes a markup and advises cardholders to decline it. Mastercard likewise recommends letting your home bank perform the conversion and checking with your issuer about applicable foreign-transaction charges.

This is a general rule, not a guarantee that USD will be cheaper for every card. The result depends on the conversion and fees attached to your specific card. The available guidance does not compare rates or fees for individual Canadian cards.

What happens when you accept the merchant’s conversion?

Dynamic currency conversion, or DCC, is when the merchant or its acquirer converts the transaction at checkout into the cardholder’s billing or home currency. If you accept a CAD amount at a U.S. checkout, the merchant-side rate and any stated fee or markup determine the converted amount. Mastercard’s transaction-processing rules, dated 10 June 2025, state that when point-of-interaction conversion is used, the merchant or acquirer applies the exchange rate.

If you pay in USD instead, the transaction remains in USD for processing and your issuer or its processing arrangement converts it according to your card’s terms. The applicable foreign-transaction fee, if any, is a separate part of that cost.

How to compare the two options

Before paying, compare the merchant’s CAD offer with the cost of a USD transaction under your card’s terms. Look at the full set of charges, not just the displayed CAD total.

  • Merchant conversion: Check the CAD amount, the exchange rate, and any additional fee or markup shown at checkout.
  • USD transaction: Check your card’s billing currency, how your issuer handles conversion, and whether it charges a foreign-transaction fee. Mastercard advises contacting your issuer for the charges that apply to your card.

If the merchant’s CAD offer is clear, you can use those figures in the comparison. If the issuer’s rate or fee is not clear, ask the issuer rather than assuming the merchant’s conversion is better.

What should the checkout screen disclose?

Visa says a DCC offer should show the amount in both currencies, the currency symbols, the exchange rate, and any additional fee or markup. You should be able to make the choice yourself: the merchant should not choose for you or use visual cues to steer you toward one currency.

If those details are missing or you feel pressured, decline the conversion and report the incident to your card issuer, as Visa recommends. Choosing USD avoids accepting the merchant’s conversion offer.
