Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most households, wait for stable firmware. Install a Matter device’s beta only if it fixes a problem or adds a feature you specifically need, comes through the manufacturer’s official channel, and you know how to recover if something goes wrong. Matter’s update-security provisions help address firmware authenticity; they do not guarantee that a beta is stable or supported by every smart-home platform.
Should you install beta firmware on Matter smart home devices?
Usually not if your device works and the beta offers no concrete benefit for you. A beta is more reasonable when it addresses a specific need, the manufacturer explicitly supports it for your exact model and hardware revision, and you can tolerate the device being temporarily unavailable while you troubleshoot.

Be especially cautious with a device whose failure could affect an important household function, such as a door lock, alarm, leak detector, or heating control. That is a practical risk judgment, not a Matter rule or a claim that these products fail more often on beta firmware.
What does Matter firmware beta mean for updates and compatibility?
Updates may come through Matter or the manufacturer
A Matter device may receive firmware through Matter’s over-the-air (OTA) update functionality or through the manufacturer’s own update method, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) Matter FAQ. Which route delivers a particular beta, and who is eligible to install it, depends on the manufacturer and platform.

The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
A Matter version does not guarantee platform support
A published Matter revision does not mean every device maker or ecosystem has implemented it. The CSA announced Matter 1.6 on June 17, 2026 as available for device makers and platforms to integrate; that announcement is not evidence that a particular device has a Matter 1.6 beta. The CSA has also said that many Matter enhancements depend on coordinated support from manufacturers and platforms. Check support for the exact device, beta build, controller, and ecosystem you use rather than assuming that a standard or firmware version settles compatibility.
For context, the CSA announced Matter 1.4.2 on August 11, 2025 and said it maintains full backward compatibility. It also noted that many enhancements require coordinated support between device makers and ecosystem platforms. Backward compatibility at the standard level does not by itself establish that a specific beta feature will appear or work in every controller.

Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
Can a beta update break a smart home device?
It can introduce problems, which is why beta software carries practical risk, but the sources available do not establish a Matter-specific beta failure rate or a universal pattern of pairing loss, resets, or broken automations. Do not assume those outcomes are inevitable—or that they cannot happen. Ask the manufacturer about known issues for your device and build, and consider what a temporary outage would mean in your home.

There is no universal rollback control established for Matter devices. Google’s Matter OTA documentation describes a recovery approach in its process: prepare an update containing the previous revision with a higher version number so devices can revert. That does not mean every manufacturer, model, or beta channel offers the same method.

Before enrolling, ask the device maker whether your exact model can be recovered, whether recovery requires another firmware update, a factory reset, recommissioning, or service, and whether the procedure is supported for the beta channel. Save the official instructions and support contact before applying the update.
How to assess a beta before installing it
- Confirm the build applies to your hardware. Read the release notes for your exact model and hardware revision; do not rely on a product-family name alone.
- Weigh the stated change against known issues. Identify the specific feature or fix you need, review listed limitations, and check whether beta enrollment is reversible.
- Verify ecosystem support. Confirm that the manufacturer and each controller or platform you rely on support the build and relevant feature. Matter support in general is not enough to prove support for a particular beta.
- Use the official update route. Enroll and install only through a manufacturer-authorized channel. Do not sideload an image from an unverified source. Ask how the image’s authenticity is checked and how recovery works.
- Prepare for an outage. Keep recovery steps and support details accessible, and decide in advance whether you can manage if the device is unavailable during troubleshooting.
- Keep critical functions on stable firmware. If a temporary failure would have meaningful consequences, the safer choice is to skip the beta.
How Matter update security relates to beta stability
Authenticity and stability are different questions. Matter Specification R1.3, published by the CSA on April 17, 2024, says devices should use verified boot based on an immutable root of trust to verify firmware authenticity. If verified boot is not supported, the specification says devices should verify firmware updates before applying them. These recommendations address unauthorized or altered firmware; they do not certify that a beta is bug-free or that a particular product implements the protections correctly.

- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
Use the manufacturer-authorized update path even when a beta is tempting. The Matter Specification R1.3 also recommends a public vulnerability-reporting mechanism and timely remediation during the stated security lifecycle, but those standards recommendations are not a substitute for product-specific release notes and recovery instructions.

Do not confuse avoiding beta with avoiding security updates
If you decide against a beta, continue to install supported stable security updates. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency advises checking with the manufacturer and installing updates for devices that do not update automatically; it warns that devices without security updates remain unprotected against newly discovered vulnerabilities. Follow the maker’s instructions for your device rather than leaving it indefinitely on old firmware.
