That advantage cuts both ways: enemies can exploit your allies’ weaknesses, so sometimes guarding, healing, or changing tactics is safer than pressing an attack.
How a turn works
Combat is turn-based, and your options include weapon attacks and Persona skills. Atlus describes the key payoff for hitting a Shadow’s weakness: the enemy is knocked down and the attacker gets a “1 MORE,” or another action. When every enemy is knocked down, you can choose an All-Out Attack.

A practical sequence is to test or use a likely weakness, then decide whether to keep up the pressure, heal, guard, or take the All-Out Attack opportunity. A weakness hit is useful, but it is not a reason to ignore the state of the rest of the fight. Enemies differ, and you should not assume that one attack type works on every target.
How to find and use weaknesses
Use in-game analysis when available and pay attention to what happens when your attacks land. A weakness hit can knock a Shadow down and create an extra action; resistance or ineffective damage is a cue to try something else. Atlus’s official description explains the knockdown and 1 MORE mechanic, but does not provide a complete enemy weakness chart, so specific matchups depend on the enemy and game context.

Weaknesses are a two-sided risk. A player-authored Steam Community guide by Ace Dreamer reports that enemies can target party weaknesses to gain extra actions and may focus attacks on one vulnerable ally. Treat this as practical secondary-source guidance rather than a complete official rules reference. If a teammate is exposed, consider protecting them or using a different action instead of relying on offense alone.
What each party member contributes
Party roles are best understood as contributions to the team’s options, not as a fixed ranking. Each party member gains a Persona with its own skills, strengths, and weaknesses. Atlus USA’s Mike Meeker describes party Personas as providing powerful spells and physical attacks. In practice, compare what a character can do for your current group: elemental coverage, physical damage, healing, or support.
The protagonist is more flexible because they can switch among multiple Personas. That lets you bring an attack type or capability the active party is missing, but it also means the protagonist’s current Persona matters when judging the team’s coverage and vulnerability. There is no universally optimal character ranking established by the cited sources; choose a lineup and Persona roster that address the encounters you are facing.

What fusion is for
Fusion lets the protagonist combine Personas obtained in battle to create other Personas. Its beginner purpose is to refresh and broaden the protagonist’s options: build a roster that can cover the current party’s missing attacks or capabilities, then switch Personas as the situation calls for it.
Social Links are connected to Persona Arcana. In his beginner guide, Meeker explains that Social Links make Personas of the corresponding Arcana easier to create and use. You do not need to memorize advanced fusion rules to understand the combat loop; focus first on maintaining useful coverage rather than holding on to one Persona for every fight.

Choose a difficulty that fits your pace
Atlus says difficulty can be selected at the beginning and does not affect the story. Its official guidance points beginners toward Very Easy or Easy for a more comfortable pace. Choosing a lower-pressure option can give you more room to learn how knockdowns, extra actions, and party coverage work.
