Should You Enable Ultimate Performance Mode in Windows 11?

For most Windows 11 users, Balanced or the PC maker’s recommended setup is the sensible default. Test a performance-focused setting only when a specific workload shows a measurable benefit.

For most Windows 11 users, no: keep Balanced or your PC maker’s recommended power setup. Try a performance-focused setting only if a specific workload is falling short and a repeatable test shows a meaningful improvement. On a laptop, also consider battery use, heat and fan noise.

One important distinction: Windows 11’s Best performance power mode is not the same thing as the legacy Ultimate Performance power plan.

What Ultimate Performance means—and what it doesn’t

Ultimate Performance is the name of a Windows power plan, a collection of settings that can have different values when a PC is plugged in or running on battery. Windows 11 also offers a separate power-mode control in Settings. Microsoft lists its built-in modes as Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance. Selecting Best performance there does not mean you have enabled the Ultimate Performance plan. Microsoft documents power plans and their settings; its Windows power-mode guidance describes the built-in modes.

Microsoft describes the High Performance plan as delivering maximum performance at the cost of higher power consumption. That description is not a benchmark of Ultimate Performance. The official material reviewed does not establish a general speed, battery-life, temperature or fan-noise advantage for Ultimate Performance over Balanced. There is no supported universal percentage gain to promise, whether for gaming, rendering or everyday responsiveness.

Which setting should you use?

Situation Practical choice Why
Everyday Windows 11 use Balanced or the PC maker’s recommended setup No universal performance gain from Ultimate Performance is established.
Laptop used on battery Keep the recommended or Balanced-oriented setup A more performance-focused setup may trade power use for performance; the size of any battery, heat or fan effect depends on the device and workload.
A specific task feels slow Test a performance-focused option while plugged in Keep it only if the same task improves measurably under comparable conditions.
Desktop or workstation with sustained work Consider a controlled test A workload-specific benefit is possible, but a blanket speed improvement is not supported by the reviewed documentation.
PC that supports Modern Standby Use Balanced or a Balanced-derived plan and the available Windows power-mode control Microsoft says Modern Standby devices allow only Balanced or plans derived from Balanced.

On Modern Standby devices, the performance slider is available when Balanced or a Balanced-derived plan is selected. The slider adjusts a limited set of performance-related settings; graphics, thermal behavior and other performance controls may also be managed by firmware or the PC maker’s software. Microsoft’s Modern Standby documentation explains the plan-family restriction.

Find the power controls available on your PC

  1. Open Settings: go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Check Power mode: choose from the modes available on your PC. Microsoft describes Best power efficiency as reducing power consumption and Best performance as favoring performance over power. Options and labels can vary with hardware, Windows version and vendor configuration. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing power mode.
  3. If Power mode cannot be changed: check whether a custom power plan is selected; Microsoft notes this can prevent changing the mode. Work or school management and OEM configuration may also restrict controls. Microsoft’s power-mode guidance covers this limitation.
  4. Check the PC maker’s utility: look for a vendor performance or thermal setting if you are troubleshooting performance. Windows power controls are not necessarily the only controls affecting the result.

How to tell whether a performance setting helps

Compare the same task under the same conditions rather than relying on how the PC feels after a setting change. For a laptop, keep the test plugged in for both runs if you are evaluating a plugged-in performance setting. Record an outcome relevant to the task, such as completion time for a render or frame-time behavior in a game. Do not infer a gaming improvement without measurements on your own hardware and game; graphics settings, drivers, thermals and vendor controls all affect results.

  • Consider battery use, heat and fan behavior alongside task performance.
  • Return to the earlier setup if the change does not deliver a useful result.

Inspect plans with powercfg

Windows includes the powercfg command-line utility. To list plans visible on your PC, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run:

powercfg /list

The command lists available power schemes; it does not by itself enable Ultimate Performance. Microsoft documents commands for listing, querying, duplicating and activating plans in its powercfg command-line reference. Availability and suitability of plan controls depend on the device, and managed work or school PCs may restrict them. A plan’s presence in a list is not evidence that it will improve a workload.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Microsoft’s documentation establishes how Windows power modes and plans work and notes the Modern Standby restriction. It does not provide a controlled Ultimate Performance-versus-Balanced comparison or universal measurements for battery life, temperatures, fan noise, gaming or rendering. Those outcomes depend on the PC, its firmware and software, and the workload, so the useful answer is the result of a consistent test on the device in question.
