Turn on Mono audio in Windows 11 if you need everything that plays through your PC to reach you in one channel, such as when you listen with just one earbud or headphone ear cup. Leave it off if you want the normal separation between left and right stereo channels. The one exception is Bluetooth LE Audio hardware with an active microphone, where the system-wide toggle can interfere with stereo playback and needs a more careful approach.
What Mono audio actually does
Mono audio is a Windows accessibility setting that merges the left and right stereo channels into a single channel. Microsoft describes the feature as a way to hear all sounds in one ear, which is why it matters most when you are using one headphone or cannot comfortably hear one side. Once it is active, sound that would normally be placed on the left or right side plays through both sides at once.

Microsoft’s support material presents Mono audio as an accessibility option. It does not claim that mono sounds better, makes audio clearer for everyone, or suits every listener. Stereo is the default because it keeps instruments, voices, and game effects separated in space, and that separation is exactly what the setting gives up.

Mono audio fits three common situations:
- You listen through one ear, whether because of single-sided hearing loss, a single earbud, or a single headphone ear cup.
- You are missing audio that plays only on one side, such as a game cue, a video narration track, or a call prompt placed on the channel you cannot hear well.
- You are troubleshooting a device and want to rule out channel placement as the cause of missing sound.
If none of these apply, leaving the setting off keeps the stereo mix that creators intended.

How to turn Mono audio on or off
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then select Audio.
- Switch Mono audio to On or Off.
- Play a stereo source, such as a music track with clear left and right elements, to confirm that both sides now sound through each channel.
The Windows Accessibility Flyout also contains a Mono audio toggle for quicker access. Microsoft’s help text for the flyout describes the feature in the same terms: it combines the left and right audio channels into one channel.
Decision guide
| Your situation | Recommended setting | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You hear through one ear or one headphone | On | You receive both channels’ content in the ear you use. |
| You want normal stereo separation for music, film, or games | Off | Left and right placement is preserved. |
| A Bluetooth LE Audio device glitches or drops audio while its microphone is active | Test On, then check the per-device format setting described below | Mono can resolve some compatibility problems, but the system-wide toggle is not a general fix. |
| A Bluetooth headset sounds thin or stops playing after you change formats | Check the device’s output format first | Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance lists a mono or low-quality audio format as a reason stereo output can be disabled. |
The Bluetooth LE Audio caveat
Mono audio is the right tool for hearing both channels in one place. It is not a switch you should flip just because a Bluetooth device behaves oddly. The Bluetooth-specific behavior depends on hardware, drivers, and the Windows version, so it is worth separating into three points.

The system-wide toggle can break stereo
The Mono audio switch in Accessibility is system-wide. When you enable it, Windows shows a warning that stereo audio may not function correctly. On compatible Bluetooth LE Audio setups, that can mean stereo playback stops behaving as expected. If you enabled mono for a single-ear need, expect stereo on those devices to be affected as long as the switch is on.

The per-device microphone format option
On supported systems running Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, with integrated LE Audio support, compatible device hardware, and manufacturer drivers, a separate option can appear for Bluetooth devices. It is labeled Format when microphone is active and may let you choose mono or stereo while the device’s microphone is in use. Whether this option exists depends on the device and driver. If it is absent, Microsoft’s guidance says the system does not support stereo while the microphone is active on that device.

When to try mono for a glitchy accessory
If a Bluetooth accessory produces glitches or loses audio while its microphone is active, Microsoft suggests trying mono in the microphone-active format setting for compatibility. That is a device-level workaround for a specific accessory, and it is separate from the accessibility toggle that affects all audio.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the Mono audio toggle is in the state you intend under Settings > Accessibility > Audio.
- If stereo output is missing from a Bluetooth device, check whether the device’s own output format is set to mono or a low-quality format.
- If the device uses LE Audio and has a microphone, check the Format when microphone is active option for that device, if your system shows it.
- If you do not see that option, confirm your Windows 11 version is 24H2 or newer and update the device’s manufacturer driver before concluding that stereo cannot work with the microphone.
- Switch Mono audio off again after testing if you need stereo separation for ordinary listening.
Version and availability notes
The Mono audio setting is documented for Windows 11. Microsoft’s core help page for the Accessibility Flyout also applies to Windows 10, but the Bluetooth microphone-format guidance is specific to Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. Microsoft’s hearing-device guidance states that hearing support varies by PC and by device model and configuration, so a control shown on one machine may not appear on another. These notes reflect Microsoft Support pages as of October 2026, and Microsoft may revise menu labels or supported configurations later.

No additional hardware is needed to use Mono audio. The setting works with any output device Windows already recognizes, and it does not depend on a particular headphone, adapter, or hearing product.
