Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA self-hosted notes app can give you more say over where your notes live and who operates the service—but it also makes you responsible for keeping that service and its backups running. Whether switching from Google Keep is worthwhile depends on the features you use, how well a replacement handles your existing notes, and how much ongoing maintenance you are willing to take on.
What you would be leaving behind in Google Keep
Before choosing a replacement, list the Keep features that are part of your actual routine. Google documents notes, checklists, drawings, labels, colors, pins, reminders, archiving, and sharing. Shared notes can be edited by other people, so collaboration may matter as much as private note storage. Google’s Keep help page describes these tools and how to use them.

- Do you rely on checklists, drawings, or image attachments?
- Do labels, colors, pins, or archiving help you find things later?
- Do you need reminders, including recurring reminders or calendar connections?
- Do you share notes that other people edit?
- Which phones, computers, and offline situations must continue to work?
These questions are more useful than choosing an app based only on the word “self-hosted.” A replacement can store notes under your control and still be a poor fit if it lacks a workflow you depend on.

What self-hosting changes—and what it does not
With a self-hosted app, you or someone you choose operates the instance, using your own hardware or a hosting provider. That gives the operator more say over where the service runs and how it is managed. It does not automatically guarantee privacy, reliable access, or backups: those depend on the app’s design and the operator’s setup.

Memos, for example, says the person running an instance manages its hosting and backups. It documents deployment on a server, NAS, or homelab, and says the software has no license fee under the MIT license; hardware or provider hosting can still cost money. These are the project’s statements, and actual cost and responsibility depend on your setup. Memos’ official site
A NAS or home server is one possible host, not a requirement. Before committing, check the chosen app’s deployment instructions and decide who will apply updates, monitor availability, and restore data if something goes wrong.

How the documented alternatives differ
The following are examples, not independent test results or a ranking. Their documented features can help narrow a shortlist, but they do not establish which app will suit every Keep user.

| Memos | Quick short-note capture; search by text, tag, or date; Markdown; ZIP export; Docker deployment on a server, NAS, or homelab. New memos are private by default, according to the project. Memos | Whether its capture flow, mobile access, reminders, collaboration, and any needed Keep-feature equivalents fit your routine. |
| Crumbs | The project describes an offline-first, self-hostable app with Docker installation, Markdown notes, checklists, image attachments, tags, pinning, archive and trash, full-text search, version history, sharing, and PWA offline support. Crumbs repository | Whether the current release supports your required clients, synchronization, reminder behavior, and migration path. |
| NoteTrace | The project documents deployment on user hardware, offline operation, reminders, and importing Google Keep Takeout data. NoteTrace overview | Whether the import preserves the specific notes, photos, lists, labels, and reminder behavior you depend on. |
Feature descriptions come from the projects themselves and can change. In particular, an app’s offline support does not establish how its web and mobile clients synchronize, and an import claim does not prove that every Keep detail transfers intact.

How to move your notes without losing the original
- Inventory what matters. Identify important notes and attachments, plus lists, labels, reminders, and shared notes you cannot afford to lose.
- Export from Keep. Google’s help center includes an “Export your data from Google Keep” topic. Start with its Keep export guidance.
- Check the target’s import instructions. NoteTrace documents importing Google Keep Takeout data, including photos. That is a project claim, not a guarantee that every content type or reminder will transfer exactly as expected.
- Run a small trial. Import a limited sample and inspect notes, images, checklists, labels, and reminders that matter to you. Test the app on the devices and networks you actually use.
- Keep the export and source data. Do not delete the original or rely on the new instance as your only copy until you have checked the migration and established a backup you can restore.
Check reminders, offline use, and sharing before switching
Reminders are a particularly important compatibility check: confirm whether the target supports the timing and repeat behavior you need, and test whether notifications arrive on the devices you use. A recent Reddit discussion about leaving Keep is one anecdotal example of someone prioritizing migration of notes and alarms, recurring reminders, and calendar integration; it does not establish how common those needs are. Reddit discussion
Apply the same practical test to offline access and collaboration. Confirm what remains available without a connection, how changes synchronize afterward, and whether other people can still edit shared notes. Test these behaviors in the clients you intend to use rather than assuming that a feature listed for the app works identically everywhere.

Decide whether the trade-off is right for you
- A self-hosted option may fit if operating the service yourself is worth the added responsibility and a candidate app meets your requirements for capture, organization, access, and export.
- Keep may remain the simpler fit if you depend on its specific reminders, drawing, sharing, or device behavior and have not verified a replacement for those needs.
- Wait before migrating fully if you cannot yet confirm import quality, synchronization, or a workable backup and restore process.
Do not choose an app on the promise of control alone. Choose it when you know what control means in your case—where data is stored, who operates the service, and how you can recover your notes—and when a real migration trial shows that your essential workflow survives.
