Generally, no. CPU thermal throttling is a safeguard: when a processor reaches its thermal limit, it reduces clock speed or power to control heat. Disabling that protection can exchange a short-term performance change for overheating, instability, excessive chassis temperatures, emergency shutdowns, or reliability risks. If throttling happens often, diagnose the cooling or system configuration instead.
What CPU thermal throttling does
Intel describes processor throttling as reducing clock speed when temperature rises above the processor’s TJ Max or Tcase threshold, helping protect it from overheating. The exact response depends on the processor and system. A slowdown during a demanding workload can therefore be a sign that thermal control is working, not proof that the control itself is faulty. Intel’s explanation of throttling was last reviewed April 9, 2026.

Throttling is not the same as a system’s other performance limits. Power, current, and manufacturer-defined platform limits can also reduce frequency. Intel’s guidance on thermal protection and power/current indicators describes insufficient cooling or power delivery and configured limits as possible causes of those indicators. Identify which limit is active before changing settings. Intel’s thermal and power-limit guidance was last reviewed March 26, 2024.

Removing a thermal control does not remove the heat being generated. Instead, it may allow the processor or system to run hotter without the same protective response. Intel notes that if throttling cannot keep temperature under control—for example, because of cooling failure or incorrect assembly—the processor may shut down automatically. That shutdown safeguard is a last resort, not a reason to disable throttling. Intel’s thermal protection guidance covers both throttling and automatic shutdown.

On laptops, system-level thermal management is also shaped by the manufacturer’s chassis, cooling design, and power policy. Intel Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT) manages system power and thermals, while manufacturers select the final settings. Intel advises against disabling DTT unless the computer manufacturer directs you to do so. DTT is related to, but not identical to, a processor’s thermal-throttling control. Intel’s DTT overview was last reviewed May 11, 2026.
For laptops with discrete graphics, Intel warns that disabling DTT can lead to temperatures above the system’s design, unexpected behavior, or thermal or power shutdowns; it may also affect warranty coverage. The warning is scoped to those laptop configurations, but it illustrates why overriding an OEM’s thermal policy can have system-wide consequences. Intel’s DTT guidance was last reviewed May 11, 2026.

What to do when throttling is frequent
Work through the checks that match your computer. For a desktop or self-built system, power it down before inspecting physical components, and follow the cooler and motherboard manufacturers’ instructions.

- Confirm the CPU cooler is suitable for the exact processor and mounted correctly. Check that its fan is connected and spinning, or that a liquid cooler’s pump is operating as intended.
- Inspect vents, filters, fans, and case airflow for dust or obstruction. Clean the system using the manufacturer’s recommended method.
- Consider whether the thermal interface material is correctly applied and in good condition. Reapplying it is relevant only if inspection or installation history points to a problem; it is not a universal fix.
- Review recent hardware changes, cooler installation, or BIOS changes that may have altered cooling or power behavior.
- When appropriate, restore BIOS defaults or follow the motherboard or system maker’s instructions for a BIOS update.

There is no single temperature threshold that applies to every CPU and system. Intel says Tjunction max commonly falls between 100°C and 110°C, but the exact value varies by processor. That range describes product limits—not a target temperature or a recommendation to run continuously at the limit. Check the exact CPU’s specifications and interpret readings in light of the workload, configuration, and system design. Intel cautions that temperature depends on those factors. When changing a setting may be appropriate
A BIOS may expose a CPU Thermal Throttling control, but its presence, name, and behavior are motherboard-specific. One ASRock BIOS manual documents such a control; that example is not universal guidance for other boards. ASRock’s X570-series BIOS manual.
Only consider changing a thermal control when the system manufacturer explicitly documents the setting for your model and the intended use. Before acting, establish what limit is triggering, what the setting controls, and what protections remain. If the goal is better sustained performance, correct the cooling, power-delivery, or configuration issue instead of suppressing the temperature response.
Choosing a safer performance or cooling fix
When a supported system mode is available, judge it by sustained performance, temperature, fan noise, battery life, stability, and manufacturer support—not just a short benchmark. For a cooling replacement, check CPU socket compatibility, physical clearance, cooling capacity for the processor and system, noise, installation constraints, and warranty or support terms. A compatible cooler, case fan, or thermal interface material may be relevant only after diagnosis identifies a failed or insufficient component; compatibility and need vary by system.
