Rise is the base game; Sunbreak is a substantial paid expansion that adds higher-rank hunts, monsters, locales, story, and hunting actions. It requires the base game.
The main caveat is the series’ core loop: if you dislike repeated combat encounters, crafting upgrades, or taking time to learn weapons and monster patterns, the games may not suit you. That’s an inference from the games’ described structure, not a claim based on personal playtesting.

What makes Monster Hunter Rise worth playing?
Rise is built around a clear progression cycle: choose one of 14 weapon types, hunt a large monster, collect materials, then craft or improve weapons and armor to take on tougher hunts. Successful hunts feed the next stage of progression, so the appeal depends on enjoying both the combat and the gear-building loop. PlayStation’s official game page describes solo and four-person play, as well as the game’s weapons, companions, and hunt-to-craft progression.

Combat and movement
Wirebugs add fast traversal and weapon-specific Silkbind attacks. They also enable Wyvern Riding, while Palico and Palamute companions can help in combat. Together, these systems provide more ways to approach a hunt than simply attacking until a monster falls, but they do not change the basic emphasis on learning encounters and improving equipment.

Playing alone or with others
Rise supports solo play and co-op. On Nintendo Switch, Nintendo lists solo play on one system and local wireless or online groups of one to four; its US listing says online play requires Nintendo Switch Online. Requirements and multiplayer arrangements can vary by platform and region, so check the relevant store listing for the version you plan to buy. Nintendo’s US bundle listing provides the Switch-specific details.
What does Sunbreak add?
Sunbreak is a premium expansion, not a standalone replacement for Rise. Capcom’s announcement describes added quest ranks, locales, monsters, hunting actions, and story elements. In practical terms, it extends the progression and gives players who already enjoy the base game more hunts to work through. Capcom’s announcement covers the expansion’s original scope.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That makes Sunbreak the natural next purchase if the base game’s combat and progression have already clicked for you. It is less compelling as a blind add-on for someone uncertain about the core loop: more content does not remove the repeated hunts and equipment crafting that define the experience.
Is Sunbreak worth buying?
Buy it if you want more of what Rise does well for you: additional monsters and places to hunt, a further tier of progression, and more story and hunting actions. If you have not yet established that you enjoy the base game, consider starting with Rise rather than paying for an expansion you may not use.

Capcom reported on June 4, 2025, that Sunbreak had surpassed 10 million cumulative units sold worldwide. That is a useful sign of reach, but it is a milestone as of that date—not a current sales total or evidence that the expansion suits every player. Capcom’s sales announcement gives the date and figure.
Which version should you buy?
| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| You already own Rise | Look for Sunbreak on its own for your platform and region; the expansion requires the base game. |
| You own neither game | Compare the base game plus expansion bundle with separate listings, and check whether the listing is digital or physical. |
| You are unsure you will enjoy the loop | Start with Rise if available to you on suitable terms, then decide whether you want more hunts before buying the expansion. |
Nintendo’s US listing describes a Switch bundle containing both the base game and expansion, while noting that they are also sold separately. Check your library before purchasing so you do not pay twice for a game you already own. Capcom’s original announcement said a bundle was planned in disc and download formats, but physical-disc availability varied by region; the consulted Nintendo US listing is digital. Verify format and availability for your region and platform rather than assuming the Switch listing applies elsewhere. Nintendo’s bundle page and Capcom’s original announcement describe those respective details.

What do reviews say, and what should you take from them?
As of October 7, 2026, Metacritic listed Sunbreak with an 86 Metascore from 45 critic reviews and an 8.0 user score from 247 ratings. Those are mutable aggregator snapshots, not official Capcom figures. Review excerpts shown on the page praise the added content and combat flexibility, while some identify multiplayer discovery and aspects of endgame tuning as drawbacks. Treat the scores as one reception signal; your tolerance for the game’s hunt-and-craft cycle matters more. Metacritic’s Sunbreak page is the source for the dated snapshot.

Who is most likely to enjoy the games?
- Choose Rise if you want weapon-based action centered on repeated monster hunts and crafting upgrades.
- Add Sunbreak if you already like Rise and want more monsters, locales, story, and higher-rank progression.
- Check the bundle carefully if you are buying both, especially for duplicate ownership, platform, regional availability, and digital versus physical format.
- Look elsewhere if you mainly want a linear story or strongly dislike repetition and gear crafting; that recommendation follows from the games’ described structure.
