Yes, you can buy one now, and for most people the M6 Mac mini is the right one. Apple announced the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini on August 25, 2026, and said they became available on September 22, 2026, through Apple Stores and authorized resellers. The real decision is which tier to buy. The M5 Pro is worth its $800 U.S. starting-price premium only if you can name a workload that needs its extra compute, memory or connectivity.
One caveat applies to everything below. The specifications and performance figures come from Apple. They are not independent test results, and no independent M6-versus-M5 Pro benchmark was available when this was written. The advice is a reasoned reading of Apple’s own configurations and stated use cases.

Sixteen gigabytes of unified memory as the starting point is a sound baseline for this group, and the configurable ceiling of 32GB leaves room if your apps are memory-hungry. Apple’s own comparison, a 12-core CPU and GPU with a 16-core Neural Engine, also covers some on-device AI use.
Who should pay for the M5 Pro
Choose the M5 Pro when you can point to a sustained job that is limited by the machine rather than by you. Apple associates it with these:

- Rendering and complex 3D, including Blender-style workloads.
- Game development.
- Scientific simulation.
- Local AI models, where up to 64GB of memory and higher bandwidth matter most. A model that doesn’t fit in memory is the clearest case for the Pro.
- Fast external storage or other Thunderbolt 5 devices, if you already own or plan to buy them. Check each device’s actual requirements first.
“Future-proofing” alone is a weak reason. If you can’t name the app, project size or device that benefits, the $800 is better spent on a larger M6 configuration or a good display.
Configuration matters more than the starting price
Apple’s U.S. buy page lists several memory and storage combinations. M6 examples include 16GB/256GB and 32GB/1TB, with 24GB options and 512GB and 1TB storage also offered. M5 Pro examples include 24GB/512GB and 64GB/1TB. Because Apple presents memory and storage as choices made when you order, don’t assume you can upgrade them later. Pick enough up front.

Ask these before ordering:
- Which applications will run, and do they use a lot of memory?
- How big are your projects or datasets?
- How much internal storage do you need, and will you rely on external drives?
- What will you connect: monitors, storage, audio gear, network?
An M6 at 32GB/1TB can be the better buy than a base M5 Pro if memory and storage are what you actually need. Compare full configured prices, not the $899 and $1,699 headline numbers.

For the M6, Apple reports up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, up to 2x faster graphics and up to 4x faster AI performance (Apple, 2026). Those compare against a previous-generation M4 Mac mini with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 32GB of memory and a 2TB SSD. They are not M6-versus-M5 Pro comparisons. Apple also publishes application-specific claims for the M5 Pro, including LLM prompt processing, Blender rendering and Affinity image processing. Read all of these as vendor figures under Apple’s chosen conditions. If you’re upgrading from an M4 Mac mini, expect real-world gains to vary by app.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, said in the announcement: “Mac mini has always been our most versatile Mac. Whether it’s being used as a home computer, powering a professional studio, or as an always-on agentic device, it’s the little Mac that can do it all.” That is promotional language from Apple, not an evaluation.

Check your setup before you order
- Display: the Mac mini has HDMI and Thunderbolt, so confirm your monitor’s input and resolution or refresh-rate needs. Apple points buyers to Studio Display, but nothing requires Apple-branded accessories.
- Thunderbolt generation: Thunderbolt 4 ports on the M6 work with many devices, but Thunderbolt 5 speeds only matter if your devices support them.
- Networking: 2.5Gb Ethernet is standard, with a 10Gb option. Decide on that at order time if your network can use it.
Should you wait?
Both models are shipping, so waiting only makes sense if you’re hoping for a discount from a reseller. This article has no verified third-party pricing. If your current machine is holding up, there’s no technical reason to rush. If you need a desktop now, buy the M6 unless your work fits the Pro list above.
