No—not under Snapchat’s stated age rules. Snapchat says users must be at least 13 to create an account, with regional variations and potentially higher age limits for some features. A parent’s permission does not change that minimum. Check the rules where you live, and don’t help your child enter a false birth date to bypass them.

What is Snapchat’s minimum age?

Snapchat’s stated minimum age to create an account is 13, though regional requirements can vary and some features may have higher age limits. The minimum is an eligibility rule, not a guarantee that Snapchat is the right choice for every 13-year-old. See Snapchat’s age requirements and its minimum-age guidance for details.

For a 12-year-old, the practical answer is to wait until the child meets the applicable age requirement. Reconsider later based on whether your teen can manage contact requests, image-sharing, location choices, pressure to respond, and asking for help when something feels wrong. These are useful family considerations, not a validated readiness test.

Can a 12-year-old use Snapchat if a parent says yes?

Parental approval does not override the platform’s stated minimum age. Don’t create an account for a 12-year-old or enter a false birthday to get around the rule. If your child already has an account, its existence does not mean the child is eligible; discuss stopping use until they meet the applicable age requirement. Snapchat says suspected underage accounts can be reported through its underage-account reporting process.

What protections and risks should parents understand?

Snapchat describes teen protections such as limits on who can contact teens, private friend lists, and tools to block or report unwanted contact. These are the company’s descriptions of its controls; they do not establish that every risk is prevented. Review Snapchat’s parent safety information and its educator resources with your teen when the time comes.

Location sharing

Snapchat says location sharing is off by default and can be shared only with accepted friends. If your teen chooses to use Snap Map, review the sharing setting and selected friends together. Discuss when location sharing is appropriate and how to turn it off.

How to use the waiting period well

  • Explain that the minimum age is 13, subject to rules where you live, and that you will revisit the decision when your child is eligible.
  • Agree on expectations for sharing photos and videos, accepting or adding contacts, and location sharing.
  • Talk through what your child should do if someone asks for something uncomfortable or inappropriate: stop responding, block or report the person, and tell a parent or another trusted adult. Snapchat also advises teens to report concerning experiences and speak with a trusted adult.

If your teen becomes eligible and you decide to try Snapchat

  1. Set up the account together using the teen’s accurate birthday.
  2. Review privacy and location settings, including whether Snap Map is used and who can see the teen’s location.
  3. Talk through who belongs on the friend list and how to handle unwanted contact.
  4. Explore Family Center together so you understand what caregivers can see and which safety tools are available.

What the European Commission’s investigation means

On 26 March 2026, the European Commission opened formal proceedings to investigate Snapchat’s compliance with child-protection requirements under the Digital Services Act. The Commission cited concerns including age assurance, contact risks, default settings, and access to information about prohibited or age-restricted products. This is an investigation, not a final finding that Snapchat violated the law. Read the Commission’s announcement for its stated concerns and next steps.
