Shopify gives Mumbai businesses tools to build and customize an online store, but choosing the platform alone does not make a store high-performing. Store design, product presentation, navigation, checkout, and any custom features still need to fit the business and its customers.
What Shopify provides for an online store
Shopify’s online store supports product sales, pages, blogs, navigation menus, product filters, custom domains, responsive themes, and accelerated checkout buttons. Shopify says a Basic plan or higher is required to sell through an online store. See Shopify’s online store overview for its description of the storefront tools.

Those features are building blocks, not a finished sales strategy. A business must decide how to present its products, organize categories and menus, guide visitors to checkout, and whether it needs functionality beyond the standard tools.

Choose a theme and level of customization
Start with a theme
Shopify offers free and paid themes. A paid theme can be previewed before purchase, so a business can assess its layout and appearance before committing. For third-party themes, the license applies to the store that purchased it, while support and updates generally come from the theme developer—not Shopify. Review the specific license and support terms before buying. Shopify’s theme guidance explains the theme options and considerations.

Use developer help when standard features are not enough
If the built-in online-store features cannot meet a requirement, Shopify describes using developer tools to create a custom storefront. Its theme guidance also points merchants toward Shopify Partners or agencies for help. This path is most relevant when the business has a specific design or functionality need that a standard theme and store setup cannot satisfy; it adds implementation decisions beyond selecting a theme. See Shopify’s Partner directory and its storefront developer documentation.
Know how Shopify billing works for India-based stores
Shopify’s India billing documentation says eligible India-based stores can pay Shopify bills in INR using UPI or certain co-branded Visa, Mastercard, or RuPay cards. Shopify says PayPal cannot be used to pay Shopify bills in India. Its billing instructions describe subscription bill payments as processed through Razorpay and explain UPI mandate setup. These details concern the merchant paying Shopify—not the payment methods a customer can use when checking out in the store. Confirm current eligibility and setup requirements in Shopify’s billing payment-method guidance.
What the Mumbai store count does—and does not—show
Store Leads listed 10,467 Shopify stores in India based in Mumbai when accessed in 2026. This is a changing third-party technology dataset, not an official Shopify census. It indicates that the dataset identifies Shopify stores in the city; it does not establish adoption growth, active sales, revenue, or business performance. See the Store Leads Mumbai report for its current listing.
Case studies show possibilities, not typical results
Published examples can illustrate what particular businesses or projects reported, but their results should not be treated as forecasts for a new Mumbai store.
Rank #3
| Example | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Bombay Shaving Company | Shopify’s customer case study reports a 150% conversion-rate uplift and more than 50,000 orders processed in two days during sale events. | These are figures in Shopify’s account of one customer. The surfaced page does not state a publication date, and the results are not a typical-outcome estimate. Read Shopify’s case study. |
| Kesari & Co. | The Mumbai-located agency’s case study reports Largest Contentful Paint decreasing from 4.9 seconds to 1.6 seconds, a 34% increase in mobile conversion, and 80% less JavaScript shipped before first paint. | These are agency-published claims about a specific project, not independently verified here or general results for Shopify stores. PRS India’s page is dated 2023 and says it was updated in July 2026. Read the agency case study. |
Neither example establishes what a typical Mumbai merchant can expect, or proves that the platform alone caused the reported result. A store’s performance depends on its own implementation and business context.

Before building, list the actual needs the store must meet: the products and information it must present, how visitors should find items, what the checkout journey needs to support, and whether standard theme features are enough. Then choose a theme or seek developer help based on those requirements. For an India-based business, check Shopify’s billing eligibility and method requirements separately from the payment setup customers will encounter.

The available evidence supports Shopify as a set of storefront-building tools and documents individual customer and agency case studies. It does not establish a city-level performance benchmark or a reliable basis for comparing total costs with other platforms.
