You can use a Shopify storefront’s public /products.json route to collect catalog and variant-price snapshots without an API key, according to a 2026 TidyTools article. It is an unofficial method, not a Shopify-documented API: availability, returned data and access can vary by store. A daily job can show what it observed at each run, but it cannot establish exactly when a price changed or guarantee that two prices are comparable.
What the products.json method does
The method described by TidyTools requests a storefront URL ending in /products.json, saves the response and repeats the request on a schedule. The article says the response can include product titles, variants, prices and availability. A comparison process can then match items between snapshots and flag changed variant prices.

This is distinct from Shopify’s authenticated Admin API. The public route is not documented in the official Shopify API references cited here, so treat its behavior as an implementation reported by TidyTools—not a universal contract or stable interface guaranteed by Shopify.

How to set up a useful daily comparison
- Choose the storefronts and products. Record each target store’s public URL and identify the relevant products or collections. Do not assume every store exposes the route.
- Request conservatively. Schedule no more often than your use case requires, and respect access controls and applicable terms. A daily observation is not a reason to send repeated requests throughout the day.
- Save timestamped snapshots. Keep the retrieval time, requested URL and returned product and variant data. Retaining raw snapshots helps distinguish a changed price from a changed response or parsing issue.
- Match products and variants consistently. Compare the same variant across runs rather than treating a product’s variants as interchangeable. Use stable identifiers where available and retain enough identifying information to spot mismatches.
- Compare prices only under like-for-like conditions. Keep geography and currency settings consistent. If a price is missing or the response is empty, record a collection failure or uncertain result rather than interpreting it as a price drop or product removal.
- Review changes against the source. A daily schedule narrows changes to the interval between observations; it does not reveal the exact time a change happened. Check an unexpected result against the storefront before acting on it.
Reported limits and data caveats
TidyTools’ 2026 article reports that the route returns up to 250 products per request and can be paginated for at most 100 pages—up to 25,000 products per catalog or collection. These are figures reported for the method by that article; they are not confirmed here as official Shopify specifications for /products.json.

- Currency: TidyTools says the product data may not include currency. A numeric price alone is therefore insufficient for a reliable cross-store or cross-country comparison.
- Geography: The article reports that prices may vary with the visitor’s country, including where Shopify Markets is active. Keep the request context consistent and document it alongside each snapshot.
- Availability: The article reports variant availability rather than exact stock quantities. Do not present an availability flag as an inventory count.
- Coverage: TidyTools reports that some stores block or disable the route, some block data-center requests, and some headless storefronts do not expose it. An inaccessible or incomplete response means the method cannot provide dependable coverage for that store.

Shopify’s API License and Terms of Use restrict use of the Shopify API for systematic or automated data collection, including scraping, and limit requests to what permissions allow. That is an explicit rule about use of the API; the cited material does not settle whether every unauthenticated request to a public storefront URL is governed identically. Public visibility is not blanket permission for every purpose or collection scale.

Do not bypass access controls or increase request rates to overcome blocking. Shopify’s crawler guidance discusses network and robots.txt controls in the context of AI crawlers; it should not be treated as a complete rule for every kind of automated collection.
