Makita LXT Sub-Compact tools use the same 18V LXT battery platform as other LXT tools, but are designed to be smaller and lighter-handling. The right choice depends on the specific tool model and the job: favor Sub-Compact when access and handling matter most, and compare model-level capacity when the task demands more power or reach. Makita’s category labels alone do not establish a universal performance winner.
What is the difference between LXT Premium and LXT Sub-Compact?
Both are part of Makita’s 18V LXT system. Makita describes Sub-Compact tools as smaller and lighter than its premium tools, aiming for “12V handling with 18V compatibility.” That is the manufacturer’s product positioning, not an independent finding that every Sub-Compact model is lighter or less powerful than every premium model.

Makita describes the broader LXT range as offering premium power and runtime for commercial applications. That positioning also does not settle which tool is better for a particular task. Tool type, model specifications, battery choice, and the work itself matter more than the category name.

Makita says LXT products share batteries and chargers. Check the exact tool’s product page and manual for compatibility details, including any Star Protection notes, before buying or swapping batteries. A common platform does not mean every battery, charger, or package detail can be assumed from the family name alone.

How to compare tools for the job
- Compare the same kind of tool. Match drill to drill, impact driver to impact driver, saw to saw, or impact wrench to impact wrench. A drill and a hammer-drill have different functions, so their specifications do not make a fair head-to-head comparison.
- Check task-specific capacity. For drills, look at torque and speed; for saws, cutting capacity; for fastening tools, the relevant fastening performance. Specifications are model-specific, so do not infer a category-wide ranking from one example.
- Assess size and weight in context. Compare body length and weight with the battery you plan to use. Published figures do not always describe the same configuration: some explicitly include a battery, while others may not.
- Consider where and how long you will handle it. Tight spaces, overhead work, and extended handling can make a smaller, lighter tool valuable. Makita identifies those uses for its Sub-Compact impact wrenches; this is manufacturer guidance, not an independent fatigue test.
- Check the package contents. Confirm whether the listing is tool-only or includes batteries and a charger. A bare tool can make sense if you already have compatible LXT batteries; a new platform buyer may need a kit.
What Makita’s model examples show
The figures below illustrate the range of specifications and the importance of matching tool types. They are not a controlled comparison between Sub-Compact and premium categories. Product-page specifications were checked on October 7, 2026, unless a dated announcement is noted.
| Model and type | Published specifications | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| XFD15ZB Sub-Compact driver-drill | 350 in-lbs maximum torque; 5-7/8 inches long; 2.9 pounds with battery | Makita’s tool-only page says battery and charger are not included. |
| XPH15ZB Sub-Compact hammer driver-drill | 350 in-lbs maximum torque; 6-1/2 inches long; 3.1 pounds with battery | Compare it with a hammer-drill, not a basic driver-drill, for a like-for-like decision. |
| XPH16Z compact hammer driver-drill | 970 in-lbs maximum torque; 6-7/8 inches long; 4.9 pounds | This is a different model and tool type from the XFD15ZB; its numbers do not establish a category-wide result. Makita lists it as tool-only. |
| XWT13ZB Sub-Compact 1/2-inch impact wrench | 155 ft-lbs fastening torque; 245 ft-lbs nut-busting torque | Makita identifies tight-space and overhead use. Those torque figures are manufacturer specifications. |
| XSH04ZB Sub-Compact circular saw | 2-1/4-inch cutting capacity at 90 degrees; 0–50-degree bevel capacity | Makita reports up to 174 crosscuts per charge when cutting 2×10 SPF lumber with a 5.0Ah battery; that specific test condition is not a general runtime promise. |
Makita’s August 17, 2021 announcement also reported 350 in-lbs maximum torque for the XFD15 driver-drill line and 1,240 in-lbs maximum torque for the XDT18 Sub-Compact impact driver. These are model-specific figures from a dated announcement, not evidence of present inventory or a substitute for checking current product details.

Which class makes sense for you?
Choose Sub-Compact when handling and access lead
- You regularly work in tight spaces or overhead, where a shorter or lighter tool may be easier to position.
- You value manageable size for repeated handling and the specific model still meets the task’s capacity requirements.
- You already own compatible LXT batteries and have confirmed fit for the tool you are considering.
Look beyond the class label when capacity leads
- The task calls for a particular torque, cutting capacity, or fastening performance.
- A candidate model’s dimensions or weight are acceptable, and its listed capacity is a closer match for the work.
- You can compare equivalent models by function and use the same battery assumptions when assessing handling.
For a decision between two actual tools, put their model pages side by side and compare the relevant capacity, dimensions, weight configuration, battery compatibility, and package contents. Makita’s LXT overview described more than 350 products in the system in 2026; that is a dated manufacturer count and may change, so the product family is too broad for a category label to replace a model-by-model check.
