It displays a store’s pages together, letting merchants zoom in to edit details or describe changes in chat. Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, and said it was rolling out to merchants over the following days.
What Shopify Canvas changes
Canvas shifts the design view from one page at a time to the storefront as a whole. Merchants can pan across pages, inspect how they fit together, then select an element to edit or ask Sidekick for a change. The broader view is intended to help merchants judge consistency across the store and see how a local edit relates to the rest of the experience.

Shopify says Canvas renders the real theme code rather than a static mockup. Merchants can preview interactions, animations, products and collections, and different screen sizes. Sidekick’s edits appear in Canvas in real time; Shopify says the agent can also work on theme files, validate code, inspect screenshots and iterate before returning changes to the merchant. This supports both individual section edits and coordinated redesigns across a storefront.

Canvas is designed to support changes across a store, not just isolated page tweaks: merchants can view the full set of pages in one workspace and use Sidekick to make changes by chat. Shopify’s launch announcement describes the capabilities, but it does not establish that every store can be fully redesigned autonomously or without merchant review. The available compatibility limits also mean Canvas is not a universal redesign path for every Shopify theme or storefront feature.

Shopify says Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026. That is Shopify’s figure for Sidekick activity before Canvas launched; it is not a measure of Canvas usage or proof that a particular redesign will take a set amount of time.

Canvas limitations to consider before using it
- Third-party themes: Canvas excludes third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store.
- Store features: Shopify’s changelog lists Markets, rollouts, translations, app blocks and app embeds among the exclusions.
- Theme updates: Themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates. Consider that maintenance trade-off before making changes.
- Editor transition: Canvas is not replacing Shopify’s existing editor yet. Shopify product director Ben Sehl said the tool is early and that gaps remain.
What Shopify says about AI-led store design
Shopify’s launch announcement presents Canvas as a way to give merchants a wider view of their storefront while Sidekick helps execute design changes. Shopify design director Austin Knight said that getting Sidekick to write code was easy, while guiding it toward good design decisions required substantial time and attention. That distinction matters: conversational editing can change how merchants express a request, but it does not remove the need to evaluate whether the result works for their brand and customers.
