Android Central’s remaining staff were laid off at the end of September 2026, according to The Verge. Its owner, Future, said it would continue publishing the site. That is not a guarantee about the publication’s long-term staffing, schedule, or future: as of The Verge’s October 1 report, the staffers had not been told whether the site would shut down.
What happened to Android Central’s staff?
In a report published October 1, 2026, The Verge said all of Android Central’s remaining staff had been laid off at the end of September. The outlet’s staff page listed six people at the time. Four—Shruti Shekar, Derrek Lee, Harish Jonnalagadda, and Nicholas Sutrich—had publicly posted about the cuts the day before the report. Former senior editor Namerah Saud Fatmi had updated LinkedIn to show her tenure at the site had ended.
Managing editor Derrek Lee and Nicholas Sutrich confirmed to The Verge that all remaining staff were affected. The six-person figure reflects the staff-page count cited in that report, not an independently audited employment total.
Is Android Central shutting down?
No shutdown had been announced in The Verge’s report. Future spokesperson Nicole Martineau told the publication: “Future will continue to publish Android Central. We’ll share further information about the future of the site in due course.” Martineau added: “We will not be providing any further comment at this time.”

The Verge also reported that staffers had not been told whether the site would shut down. Future’s statement confirms its immediate plan to keep publishing, but does not establish the site’s longer-term staffing, editorial leadership, publishing frequency, or format. The available reporting therefore supports neither a claim that Android Central is closing nor a guarantee that its operations will remain unchanged.
Who was publishing Android Central after the layoffs?
When The Verge published its report on October 1, Android Central remained online and new articles were appearing under freelance contributors’ bylines. That describes the site’s status at the time of the report; it does not establish a permanent staffing arrangement or what later publishing would look like.

Android Central’s About page describes the publication as part of Future PLC, an international media group and digital publisher. It identifies Android as the site’s primary focus, alongside coverage of Chromebooks, phone accessories, gaming hardware, streaming devices, and broader technology. That explains the publication’s beat, but does not explain the layoffs or reveal Future’s operating plan.
