Use Streamable HTTP when clients need to reach the server remotely or the endpoint belongs inside a hosted web application. The choice turns on where the process runs, who connects to it, and how you operate and secure that boundary—not on a universal preference for one transport.
Choose transport by where the server runs
| Question | Desktop app with local subprocess | Hosted web app or remote endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | stdio: the host starts the server process and exchanges JSON-RPC messages over standard input and output. See the TypeScript SDK stdio guide. | Streamable HTTP: a client connects to an HTTP endpoint. An ASGI app can mount an MCP server at /mcp. See the Python SDK deployment guide and existing-app guide. |
| Who can reach it | Typically the host on the same machine that owns and starts the process. The SDK selection guidance frames the decision around the client you need to integrate: MCP PHP SDK. | Remote clients, or other parts of a web application that need an MCP endpoint. See the TypeScript SDK connection guide. |
| Lifecycle and operations | The host owns the child process. Closing the input stream ends the connection. The host also supplies the process configuration. | The web application and serving infrastructure own availability, routing, and process operation. The app server and load balancer remain deployment concerns; see the Python SDK deployment guidance. |
| Security boundary | Keep the local process configuration controlled, and reserve stdout for protocol messages. | Configure permitted Host and Origin values for the actual deployment. The Python SDK’s localhost defaults can reject requests using a production hostname until the allowlist is set. |
| Scaling model | The cited stdio guidance describes a host-managed local process; it does not establish a remote, multi-user scaling model for stdio. | The 2026-07-28 protocol is stateless and designed so a request can be handled by any server instance without protocol session affinity. You still need normal application hosting and operations. |
These are deployment patterns, not mutually exclusive product architectures. A project can offer both transports, but each needs an implementation and a supported configuration path; the SDK examples show distinct stdio and HTTP entry points.

Shipping a desktop integration over stdio
In stdio mode, the desktop host launches the MCP server as a child process and communicates with it through stdin and stdout. This is a natural fit when the server should live on the user’s machine and serve the host that started it.
- Keep stdout protocol-clean. Do not print startup banners, debug messages, or other diagnostics there; they can interfere with protocol messages. Send logs to stderr or the host’s logging facilities.
- Plan for host-owned lifecycle. The host starts and manages the process. When the input stream closes, the connection ends, so server behavior should account for shutdown rather than assuming a long-running shared service.
- Configure the local process deliberately. The host’s process configuration is part of the boundary: it determines what is launched and what environment the process receives.
stdio is not a way to make one local process remotely available. If another machine or a hosted application must connect to the server, use a network transport and design its access controls and operations accordingly.

Embedding an MCP endpoint in a hosted web app
For a remotely reachable server—or an MCP feature in an existing web application—Streamable HTTP is the appropriate pattern. With the Python SDK’s ASGI example, the application mounts MCP at /mcp. The MCP mount is an application route, not a separate listener: the application server owns the listening port.
- Mount the MCP app. Add the MCP application to the existing ASGI app at the route your clients will use, such as
/mcpin the SDK example. - Configure the public host and origin. Set the allowed Host and Origin values to match the real deployment. The Python SDK’s localhost checks can reject a production hostname if it has not been allowed.
- Operate it as part of the web service. Keep responsibility for the application server, routing, load balancer, process management, monitoring, authentication, and application dependencies in the deployment plan. Stateless protocol handling does not provide those operational pieces.
Local HTTP is still HTTP. The Python SDK’s Host and Origin checks help defend against DNS rebinding; the Ruby SDK likewise documents Host and Origin validation by default for locally bound servers. Do not respond to a rejected hosted request by disabling protections blindly: configure the expected deployment values and review the relevant SDK guidance. See the Python deployment guide and Ruby SDK documentation.

What the 2026-07-28 MCP revision changes
The MCP maintainers announced the 2026-07-28 specification on July 28, 2026; the specification status tracker lists it as final. The revision makes the protocol core stateless, retiring the initialize/initialized exchange and session identifier so each request carries the information needed for a server instance to process it. The release announcement describes the change: The 2026-07-28 Specification.
That design removes protocol-session affinity as a routing requirement, but it does not remove the need to run, monitor, secure, and scale the web application. Nor should you assume an SDK upgrade automatically selects the new wire protocol. For example, the TypeScript SDK migration guide says hand-constructed clients and servers continue using the 2025-era protocol unless the 2026-07-28 entry point is selected. Check the entry point and migration instructions for the language SDK you use.

Security is not guaranteed by transport choice
stdio and Streamable HTTP define how a client and server communicate; choosing either does not, by itself, establish a complete authorization design. The deployment decision should include who is allowed to invoke the server and what its tools can access.

- For stdio, protect the host’s process configuration and keep protocol output separate from logs.
- For HTTP, configure Host and Origin protections for the real hostname rather than casually turning them off.
- For either transport, define authentication and authorization for the application’s actual users and capabilities. The cited transport and deployment guidance does not specify a complete authorization scheme.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose stdio if a desktop host launches a local server process and the integration is for that host on that machine.
- Choose Streamable HTTP if clients need a remotely reachable endpoint or the MCP server is being added to a hosted web app.
- Choose to support both only when there are real use cases for both, and maintain separate, documented deployment paths.
- Before release, verify the selected SDK’s transport setup, Host and Origin configuration, and protocol revision behavior.
