Neither method is universally faster. The winner is the one that produces more eligible shiny checks per minute in the specific game and for the target you want. A soft reset may be efficient when a static encounter can be restarted quickly; wild encounters may pull ahead when you can check several Pokémon at once or refresh spawns rapidly.
Why shiny odds alone don’t tell you which method is faster
Shiny odds describe the chance of a shiny on each eligible check, not how long the hunt will take. Time depends on how many checks each method produces per minute, as well as the odds that apply to those checks.

As generation-level reference figures, Bulbapedia lists base odds of 1 in 8,192 per eligible encounter for Generations II through V (Bulbapedia). PokemonRef gives a base rate of 1 in 4,096 from Generation VI onward (PokemonRef). These are per-check probabilities, not attempt limits or guarantees: reaching that number of checks does not ensure a shiny.

Those figures do not establish a universal time comparison. A method with fewer checks per minute might still be competitive if its applicable odds are better; a faster cycle can make up ground by generating more checks. Compare methods within the same game and setup.

How the two methods generate checks
Soft resets
A soft-reset hunt repeats a static encounter by restarting the game or resetting the relevant encounter, then checking whether the Pokémon is shiny. It produces another opportunity only when that reset actually generates a fresh eligible check. The reset cycle’s full duration—including any animations, dialogue, and other steps needed to reach the check—determines how many attempts fit into a minute.
Wild encounters
Wild hunting can produce checks through repeated encounters or refreshed overworld spawns. Its pace depends on how quickly you can reach and inspect eligible Pokémon, and on how many are checked in each cycle. If one refresh reveals multiple eligible Pokémon, count all of those checks rather than treating the refresh as a single attempt.
How to compare the methods for your hunt
- Specify the game and target. Shiny rules and encounter mechanics differ by game, so a comparison without them cannot produce a reliable ranking.
- Confirm eligibility. Check that the target is not shiny-locked and that your reset or encounter action generates a new shiny check in that game.
- Identify the applicable odds. Use the odds for the game and method, including any relevant bonuses. Do not assume a generation-level base rate covers every game-specific rule.
- Count checks per cycle. For a reset, count the eligible static encounter. For wild hunting, count each eligible Pokémon actually checked—not merely each spawn refresh or battle.
- Measure checks per minute. Time several complete cycles, including the actions needed to return to the next check. Use the same conditions for both methods.
- Compare expected time, not just attempts. If the per-check shiny probability is p and you complete r eligible checks per minute, the average waiting time is about 1 ÷ (p × r) minutes. This is a probability-based average, not a promised result or a guarantee by a particular attempt.
What can change the result
- Different game rules: A reset or spawn refresh may not reroll the target in every game, so verify that the action creates a fresh check.
- Shiny locks: A locked target cannot be found shiny through repeated checks, making its apparent hunt speed irrelevant.
- Bonuses: Game-specific bonuses can change the odds; include only bonuses that apply to the target and method being compared.
- Multiple spawns: Wild encounters can check several Pokémon during one refresh, potentially increasing checks per minute.
- Cycle overhead: Loading, travel, animations, and menu navigation all count toward elapsed time, even though they do not change the per-check odds.
Verdict
Choose by measured eligible checks per minute for your game, target, and bonuses—not by the method’s name or base odds alone. Without a specified game and target, there is no evidence-based universal winner between soft resets and wild encounters.
