These effects usually clear within two to three days. Most do not mean you should skip your second dose, but worsening symptoms or signs of a severe allergic reaction call for medical attention.
What side effects can you expect after Shingrix?
Reactions can affect the injection site or the rest of the body. They may temporarily make normal activities harder, and CDC says they usually resolve on their own in two to three days. The symptoms are reported more often by younger people.

At the injection site
- Sore arm or mild to moderate pain

CDC’s Shingles Vaccination guidance, dated August 19, 2025, states: “Symptoms usually go away on their own in 2 to 3 days.”

How common or severe are the reactions?
In results across eight clinical trials involving more than 10,000 participants, CDC reported that 78% of Shingrix recipients had at least some injection-site pain. About 1 in 10 reported a grade 3 injection-site reaction, and about 1 in 10 reported a grade 3 systemic reaction. Overall, 17% reported a grade 3 reaction severe enough to prevent normal activities. These are group-level trial findings, not a prediction of what any one person will experience.

For context on the benefit, CDC’s current vaccination guidance says Shingrix was 91% effective in preventing postherpetic neuralgia in adults aged 50 years and older. That figure describes prevention of this shingles complication; it does not mean every vaccinated person will avoid shingles or side effects.
How can you manage discomfort?
If side effects are bothering you, CDC says an over-the-counter medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help ease discomfort. Should you get the second dose if the first caused side effects?
Yes. CDC recommends completing the two-dose Shingrix series even if common side effects followed the first dose. For adults aged 50 and older, the doses are ordinarily given two to six months apart. Adults aged 19 and older with weakened immune systems also need two doses; when needed, their second dose may be given one to two months after the first. Follow the timing advised by your healthcare provider.

Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms are getting worse or are not improving. Common short-lived reactions are different from signs of a severe allergic reaction, which is rare but can be life-threatening.

Call 911 and seek emergency care if you develop warning signs such as hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, or weakness. Do not wait to see whether these symptoms pass.
