Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says stopping physical game disc production could cost Sony more than the sales of a minority of disc buyers: it could alienate collectors and weaken the sense that customers own what they buy. The reported plan would begin in 2028, according to VGC, but Sony has not announced it in the sources available here. Layden also said he did not know the financial calculations behind the decision.
What Layden said about the reported plan
VGC reported on October 6, 2026, that Layden discussed Sony’s reported plan to stop making game discs starting in 2028 on The Expansion Pass podcast. The date and plan are reporting, not a confirmed Sony announcement. The report does not establish the plan’s full scope or whether exceptions would apply. VGC’s report

Layden acknowledged that downloading games is convenient. His concern was that a smaller group of physical buyers may be especially committed, and that losing the option to buy a disc could change how people view a purchase. He framed the issue around collecting, resale and the distinction between owning a physical copy and buying access to a digital game.

Why he thinks physical games still matter
Collectors value the object, not just the game
Layden described players as people who like to collect and display what they buy: “We are an inquisitive collecting sort of people, and we like to show off our stuff.” For those customers, a disc and its packaging are part of the appeal; a download does not provide the same physical object to keep or show.

Resale changes the feeling of ownership
Layden put the distinction bluntly: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing.” He also said, “If you’re buying access, that doesn’t quite sound as sexy, to be honest.” These are his arguments about consumer perception. They do not settle the legal status of digital game licenses or establish that every digital purchase has identical terms.
His percentage was an illustration, not sales data
Layden offered “Maybe 80% of the people download, and 20% don’t, or whatever that breakdown is going to be.” The qualification matters: he was sketching a possible split, not citing measured PlayStation sales. The reporting reviewed here does not establish an independently sourced figure for PlayStation’s physical-versus-digital sales.

What Layden said earlier about Sony’s calculations
In an earlier interview with Eurogamer, published July 3, 2026, Layden described the decision as likely to involve financial calculations, while saying he did not know what Sony’s figures were. He also recalled considering broadband availability during his time at PlayStation and pointed to people who rely on physical games because they lack internet access. Those remarks describe his own thinking and judgments, not verified accounts of Sony’s internal rationale or a current measurement of internet access. Layden also said he no longer regarded the second-hand market as a major business concern. That view sits alongside his newer emphasis on resale as part of what physical ownership means to buyers: a market may matter less to a platform holder’s business calculations while still mattering to customers.

The available reports describe a reported plan to stop disc production starting in 2028; they do not establish that every PlayStation game will become digital-only, when any transition would affect purchases, or what exceptions might exist. They also do not confirm that physical games are no longer available now. For current availability and any future changes, rely on an official Sony announcement or retailer listings rather than treating the reported timeline as a complete policy.
Layden’s point is not that downloads lack advantages. It is that convenience is only one part of the decision: collectors may value a tangible copy, some players depend on offline access, and resale can shape the feeling of ownership. Whether those concerns outweigh Sony’s financial considerations is not something his comments resolve.
