Its broader low-fare windows are 21–57 days and 33–67 days before departure, respectively. These are historical averages—not guaranteed dates for a particular route—and Google’s advice when your plans are fixed is to book early.
Google’s 2026 holiday booking windows
Google published these estimates on Oct. 5, 2026, drawing on five years of aggregated Google Flights data. The figures concern U.S. holiday departures; Google’s post does not detail the sample construction for its 2026 holiday estimates.

For Thanksgiving and Christmas, count back from your own departure date rather than treating a calendar date as universal. The average low is a midpoint in a wide historical range, not a promise that waiting until that exact day will produce the cheapest fare. Google’s 2026 figures and advice are in its 2026 holiday travel guidance.

If your travel dates and route are set, buying early is the safer choice for protecting the itinerary you want. Google’s guidance says, “Our best recommendation is to book your holiday flights ASAP,” and calls early booking the safest bet when dates are fixed. Waiting for the average low can mean losing a suitable schedule or fare without any guarantee that the price will fall.

If you have flexibility, use the historical windows as context and inspect the fare for your exact route and dates. Google Flights may show an itinerary-level “cheapest time to book” insight. Google says its fare guidance is based on past trends; future prices can differ from those patterns.
How to assess a specific itinerary in Google Flights
- Enter your route and dates. Search the exact airports and travel dates you are considering. The general holiday averages cannot tell you what a particular itinerary costs today.
- Check the Tips section. When Google has sufficient confidence from past fare trends, it may indicate that prices are lower than usual, unlikely to drop, or likely to increase. Treat this as a guide, not a forecast guarantee.
- Compare flexible dates and airports. Use Dates, Price graph, and Airports to examine other travel days, weeks or months, and nearby airports. Track prices if you want alerts when fares change.
- Review the whole itinerary before choosing. Compare total price, stops and their length, any self-transfer or airport change, the booking provider, and convenience—not just the headline fare.
Google’s Google Flights help page says Best balances price, convenience, and ease of booking, while Cheapest prioritizes low price. Cheapest results may include more online travel agency options or itineraries with self-transfers or airport changes. Google says it compares offers from more than 300 travel partners, including airlines, online travel agencies, and aggregators, but may not show every available offer.

Which other changes can lower the fare?
Be flexible about travel days
In Google’s 2026 analysis, departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday was associated with fares about 14% lower than weekend flights. For domestic trips, flying out and returning on Sunday could cost up to 20% more. These are aggregate comparisons, not savings guaranteed on an individual route.

Google found nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average. A connection may reduce the fare, but weigh that against added travel time and complexity. A low-priced itinerary can also involve a self-transfer or a change of airport, so check what the connection actually requires.

Do not plan around the day you buy
Wednesday bookings were about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday bookings in Google’s analysis, a difference Google describes as negligible. Choosing a convenient fare and flexible travel dates is more consequential than waiting for a particular weekday to purchase.
Why older booking advice may give different numbers
Google’s 2022 analysis put the average low at 52 days before Thanksgiving and 22 days before Christmas—very different from its 2026 estimates. The numbers are not interchangeable: Google’s estimates have shifted across annual analyses, and the 2022 post documented a specific sample of average round-trip fares observed from Aug. 1, 2017, to Aug. 1, 2022. That sample covered 6–9-day and 13–16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets; holiday trips departed before and returned after Thanksgiving or Christmas. What destination search trends do—and do not—tell you
Google reported that, for domestic Thanksgiving travel, Hilo, Buffalo, Columbus, Punta Gorda, and Greenville had the largest relative increases in Google Flights searches versus 2025. For international Christmas and New Year’s Eve searches, it listed Athens, Québec City, Rio de Janeiro, Hanoi, and Guatemala City. These are changes in search interest, not evidence that a destination has the lowest airfare or is the right choice for a particular traveler.
