Businesses remain vulnerable to SharePoint attacks in 2026 when on-premises servers are unpatched, exposed to the internet, running unsupported versions, or left with signs of an earlier intrusion undiscovered. Official advisories from CISA, Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency, and Canada’s Cyber Centre reported exploitation of different SharePoint Server vulnerabilities on different dates. Installing an update closes the vulnerability it addresses; it does not prove attackers never accessed the server.
The ToolShell vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s 2025 guidance affect on-premises SharePoint Server, not SharePoint Online. Cloud files can still be changed by ransomware running on an infected computer if that computer syncs SharePoint or OneDrive files. The first step is to establish which deployment your organization actually uses.

What SharePoint attacks are being reported in 2026?
As of October 5, 2026, official advisories describe active exploitation of several SharePoint Server vulnerabilities. They are separate reports, not evidence of one attack campaign or a single exploit chain. The reported status below reflects each authority’s dated notice.
| Vulnerability | Reporting authority and date | What the advisory establishes |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-32201, CVE-2026-45659, CVE-2026-56164 | CISA, July 14, 2026 | CISA reported active exploitation of these flaws affecting on-premises SharePoint. Its alert describes unauthorized access and post-exploitation actions including remote code execution, IIS machine-key theft, deserialization techniques, persistence, and malware deployment. |
| CVE-2026-55040 | Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, August 28, 2026; page updated October 4 | The agency reported active exploitation and gave a CVSS v3.1 severity score of 9.1 out of 10. |
| CVE-2026-63520 | Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, August 28, 2026; page updated October 4 | The agency reported active exploitation and gave a CVSS v3.1 severity score of 8.1 out of 10. |
| CVE-2026-65660 | Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, September 24, 2026 | The Centre reported active exploitation. The flaw can permit authenticated arbitrary code execution; when chained with other vulnerabilities on servers configured for anonymous access, it can enable pre-authentication remote code execution. |
These notices do not provide an aggregate count of compromised businesses or servers. CISA’s July notice said CVE-2026-55040 and CVE-2026-58644 were not then known to be exploited; Singapore’s later report changed the status for CVE-2026-55040. The reviewed notices do not establish a later exploitation status for CVE-2026-58644.

Which SharePoint deployments are at risk?
On-premises SharePoint Server
The 2026 exploitation notices above concern SharePoint Server, which organizations host and maintain themselves or through a service provider. Exposure depends on the specific vulnerability, product edition and build, configuration, and whether an attacker can reach the server. Internet-facing servers with missing applicable updates are a priority, but internal systems can also warrant review if there is evidence of suspicious access or a route from a compromised network.
Support status matters as well as patch status. Canada’s Cyber Centre says SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2019 reached end of life on July 15, 2026, and urges organizations to migrate to a supported version. An end-of-life server should be treated as a lifecycle risk, not just a server waiting for its next patch.
SharePoint Online and synced files
Microsoft’s 2025 ToolShell guidance applies to on-premises SharePoint Server, not SharePoint Online. That scope distinction does not mean files in Microsoft 365 can never be affected by ransomware: Microsoft describes ransomware running on an infected user’s computer and changing files through a mapped drive or OneDrive connection. Those changed files can then sync to SharePoint or OneDrive through the sync client or WebDAV.

A collaboration server can hold valuable business information and run with access to other systems. An attacker who gains code execution or persistence may use the server as a foothold for discovery, credential or key theft, malware deployment, or further access. The exact path varies by vulnerability and environment; the behaviors reported in one incident should not be treated as a guaranteed sequence for every SharePoint flaw.
In its July 2025 ToolShell analysis, Microsoft described attackers sending crafted requests to the ToolPane endpoint on exposed on-premises servers. In observed attacks, a web shell named spinstall0.aspx or a similar variation was uploaded to retrieve ASP.NET machine-key material. Microsoft also reported command execution through the SharePoint-supporting w3wp.exe process, discovery activity, and ransomware deployment by Storm-2603. These are observations from Microsoft’s 2025 reporting, not a claim that every 2026 vulnerability uses ToolShell or follows the same steps.

The practical implication is that SharePoint security is not only a patching problem. The attack surface, account privileges, server configuration, endpoint defenses, and ability to detect and investigate activity all affect what an attacker can do after reaching a server.
What should business leaders ask IT to do first?
- Inventory every deployment. Identify each on-premises farm, its edition, installed build, internet exposure, support status, and responsible owner. Include systems managed by another department, hosting provider, or service partner.
- Verify applicable updates. Ask IT to confirm the current Microsoft security update for each edition and farm, then verify that installation succeeded. A patch listed for one CVE or build is not proof that all later or separate issues are fixed.
- Set a migration plan for unsupported servers. If SharePoint Server 2016 or 2019 is still in use, ask for a dated plan to move to a supported version, given their July 15, 2026 end-of-life date.
- Review exposure and privileged access. Confirm whether SharePoint is reachable directly from the internet, whether Central Administration is externally reachable, and whether privileged and inactive accounts have been reviewed.
- Request a compromise review when warranted. If a server was exposed while vulnerable, or logs, alerts, or user reports show suspicious activity, ask security staff to assess whether an intrusion occurred. An update alone cannot establish that no earlier access happened.
How should administrators harden SharePoint Server?
Patch the actual edition and verify the build
Apply Microsoft’s current security updates for the server’s edition and validate successful installation. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 Subscription Edition notice identifies KB5002908 as a security update resolving several security issues, with package build 16.0.20326.20136. That update information is specific to Subscription Edition and is not a substitute for checking Microsoft’s current guidance for other editions or later releases.

| SharePoint Server edition | Fixed build named for CVE-2026-65660 |
|---|---|
| SharePoint Server 2016 | 16.0.5565.1001 |
| SharePoint Server 2019 | 16.0.10417.20198 |
| SharePoint Server Subscription Edition | 16.0.19725.20522 |
These are the builds the Centre lists for that named vulnerability. They should not be treated as universal current builds or as evidence that a farm has every subsequent security update.
Reduce exposure and strengthen access controls
- Avoid exposing SharePoint directly to the public internet where possible. If external access is required, CISA recommends a Layer 7 reverse proxy or equivalent application-layer control that requires authentication and can inspect and filter requests.
- Block external access to SharePoint Central Administration. Restrict farm and database communications to the systems that need them.
- Review privileged and inactive accounts, enforce multifactor authentication for administrators and other privileged users, and limit access to management interfaces.
- Enable Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI) integration for every SharePoint web application. CISA and Canada’s Cyber Centre recommend AMSI; Microsoft recommends Full Mode for Request Body Scan Mode where feasible.
- Use Microsoft Defender Antivirus or an equivalent endpoint protection solution, as recommended in Microsoft’s ToolShell guidance.
Monitor for signs of compromise
Review SharePoint, IIS, endpoint protection, and authentication telemetry for activity that does not fit normal administration or application use. Relevant indicators include:

spinstall0.aspx. - Unexplained web-part or configuration changes.
- Abnormal activity by the IIS worker process
w3wp.exe, privilege escalation, or discovery behavior. - Unexpected access to ASP.NET machine keys, along with Defender, AMSI, or other endpoint detections.
A positive detection should trigger the organization’s incident response process. Preserve and investigate relevant evidence, and follow current Microsoft and incident-response guidance for the affected build. Microsoft’s 2025 ToolShell procedure includes ASP.NET machine-key rotation and an IIS restart after specified mitigation steps; during a suspected intrusion, investigate for stolen key material and persistence before rotating keys, so an attacker cannot simply obtain replacement keys. Do not treat that older procedure as a universal response checklist for every 2026 vulnerability.

- Stop OneDrive synchronization or disconnect the mapped SharePoint library drive promptly to limit further propagation of changed files.
- Contact an administrator to assess the affected endpoint, account, and cloud files, and determine restoration options.
- Keep the endpoint and server investigations distinct: stopping sync can limit file changes, but it does not by itself establish whether an on-premises SharePoint server was compromised.
Microsoft’s guidance for this scenario is to stop sync or disconnect the mapped drive immediately and ask an administrator about restoring affected files.
Why a patch is necessary but not enough
For a server without signs of prior access, applying the correct current updates and reducing exposure address immediate weaknesses. For a server that was vulnerable while reachable, or that shows suspicious requests, web shells, abnormal process behavior, or other indicators, the response also needs to determine whether the attacker established persistence or took key material. The first case is primarily a hardening and verification task; the second is a potential incident requiring investigation and response.
As of October 5, 2026, official advisories show that SharePoint Server remains an active security concern. The defensible approach is to know exactly what is deployed, keep each supported farm current, limit access, and investigate suspicious activity rather than assuming that a successful update settles the question of compromise.
