Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Each customer manages their own site account and files. The hosting provider runs the server underneath. That arrangement spreads the cost across customers and removes most server administration. In exchange, you get less control and less guaranteed capacity than more isolated hosting.
What is shared and what stays separate
Amazon Web Services (AWS) describes the model this way in its web-hosting explainer: “Shared hosting service providers give you shared access to their web server.” The customer gets a directory or folder for their site’s files. Server resources such as disk space, CPU power and RAM are shared. AWS notes that a provider can put hundreds of websites on one server. That is an example of what is possible, not a standard count for every host. Customers do not get access to the server’s main (root) directory.

| Shared among accounts | Separate for each customer |
|---|---|
| The physical server and its operating system | Your account and login |
| CPU, RAM and disk capacity | Your site’s directory and files |
| Server maintenance, run by the provider | Your domain, site content and application settings |
Account separation is not a guarantee of security or of isolated performance. Both depend on how the specific provider builds and limits its platform.

How a request reaches your site
Hostinger’s tutorial on shared hosting gives a representative high-level flow. Other hosts may configure things differently.
- A visitor types your domain name into a browser.
- DNS resolves the name to the IP address of the server.
- The browser sends its request to that server.
- Web-server software maps the requested domain to the matching hosting account, because many domains can share one server.
- The server returns the files. For a dynamic site, such as a blog, it first runs application code and queries a database to build the page.
Who manages what
Shared hosting is positioned as a managed, low-maintenance option. You normally work through account tools, such as a control panel, a file manager or a site installer. You do not manage the operating system or low-level server settings. Some plans bundle tools for setting up and running a site. Features differ by provider, so check the plan you are considering.
Advantages
- Lower cost. The provider’s operating costs are split across many customers, which makes this a common entry point.
- Little server work. The provider handles server maintenance, which suits people who don’t want to administer a server.
- Fits modest sites. AWS lists new or small businesses, personal sites and blogs, and sole traders as example users.
Limitations
- Variable performance. A traffic spike or heavy resource use by another account on the server can affect speed. This is a risk of the model, not something that happens on every plan.
- Plan limits. Providers can cap resource use, so read the terms of the plan.
- Less configuration control. You cannot freely change server-level settings.
- Limited scalability and rising costs. Hostinger lists limited scalability among the drawbacks, and AWS notes that costs can grow as usage grows.
Neither source gives a visitor count at which a site has outgrown shared hosting, so any such number you see elsewhere is a rule of thumb. Watch for signs instead. These include slowdowns at busy times, hitting the plan’s limits, or needing software or settings the host does not allow.

Shared hosting compared with other models
| Factor | Shared hosting | VPS and cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Generally lower | Generally higher for more exclusive resources |
| Resources | Pooled, so they can be affected by overall server demand | VPS resources are more exclusive, according to AWS |
| Control | Limited server configuration | Greater control over the environment |
| Administration | Handled by the provider | More control can mean more technical work |
| Architecture | Conventional single shared server | AWS describes cloud hosting as a cluster of servers with replication |
Providers use these labels differently. Some “cloud” or “managed” plans differ little from shared plans, and some are fully isolated. Compare the actual terms: guaranteed resources, caps, and what you can configure.

Shared hosting fits when your site is modest in size and resource needs and you want an affordable, managed setup. Look at VPS, cloud or dedicated options when you need predictable resources, isolation, deeper configuration control or room to scale. Before you buy, check the provider’s current limits, renewal pricing and terms. Plans and prices change often.

Is shared hosting good for beginners?
Generally yes. The provider runs the server and you use account tools, so there is little technical setup. Hostinger and AWS both position it as a low-maintenance, affordable starting point for personal sites, blogs and small businesses.
Do I get my own server with shared hosting?
No. You get an account and directory on a server that other customers also use. For more exclusive resources you would look at VPS, cloud or dedicated hosting.
