To share an external drive from Linux Mint with Windows 11, mount the drive on Mint, configure a Samba share that points to its mounted directory, and give the Samba account the required Linux filesystem permissions. On Windows, open the share with a UNC path such as \mint-hostshare-name or map it to a drive letter. Samba can only provide the access that Linux permits for the files underneath the share.
Before you configure Samba
First identify the drive’s filesystem, its current mount point, and the Linux account and permissions that apply there. Samba shares a directory in the mounted filesystem; it does not share a disconnected USB device. The correct mount and permission setup depends on whether the drive uses NTFS, exFAT, ext4, or another filesystem, and on your Mint release. There is no single permission recipe that safely applies to all of them.

- Connect the drive and confirm that Mint has mounted it.
- Locate the directory you want Windows to access. Share that directory rather than the whole drive if the narrower scope is sufficient.
- Check whether the intended Linux account can read the directory and, if needed, create or modify files there.
- Decide whether the drive will be available after a reboot. Confirm persistent-mount behavior for your filesystem and Mint version rather than assuming the current mount point will remain unchanged.
Configure a named Samba share
Install or confirm that Samba is available on Mint, then define a share in the Samba configuration with its path set to the mounted directory. The Samba manual describes share definitions and explains that host operating-system permissions limit what Samba can grant: a share marked writable does not override Linux permissions on the files or directory. See the Samba configuration manual.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Choice | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only share | Windows only needs to open or copy files from Mint. | Samba’s read only setting blocks share-level writes. Linux permissions still apply. |
| Read-write share | Windows needs to create, edit, rename, or delete files. | Set the share to permit writes and make sure the authenticated Linux account also has suitable filesystem permissions. |
| Named authentication | You want access limited to a particular user. | Use a Samba-authenticated account and grant it only the necessary access to the mounted directory. |
| Guest access | A deliberately limited use case requires access without a named account. | Guest configuration changes who can connect; it does not bypass the host filesystem’s permissions. Prefer named authentication for a personal drive. |
After editing the configuration, validate it and reload or restart the appropriate Samba service for the version installed on your Mint system. Package names, service names, and exact commands can vary; confirm them for your installation rather than copying an unverified command.
Connect from Windows 11
You can open the share directly or map it to a drive letter. Microsoft documents both the network-drive mapping flow and the option to reconnect at sign-in in its Windows guide to mapping a network drive.

Open the share by UNC path
- In File Explorer’s address bar, enter
\mint-hostshare-name, replacingmint-hostwith the Mint computer’s network name andshare-namewith the Samba share name. - Press Enter. If prompted, sign in with the Samba account configured for the share.
If you do not know the computer or share name, use the names configured on Mint. If browsing under Network does not show the Mint computer, try the known UNC path directly; discovery and access to a known share are separate tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMap the share to a drive letter
- In File Explorer, select This PC, then choose Map network drive. If the command is not visible in the ribbon or menu, right-click This PC and choose it there.
- Select an unused drive letter.
- In the Folder field, enter
\mint-hostshare-name. - Select Reconnect at sign-in if you want Windows to try to reconnect the mapped drive when you sign in.
- Finish the dialog and provide the Samba credentials if Windows requests them.
A mapped letter is a convenient shortcut to the same network share; it does not change the share’s permissions or make the Mint drive available when it is unmounted.

Troubleshoot in layers
Check the path from the drive outward instead of changing several settings at once:
- Confirm the drive is mounted. On Mint, make sure the directory configured as the share path exists and is on the external drive.
- Check local access. Verify that the Linux account used for Samba can read the directory and can write to it if Windows needs to modify files.
- Check the share definition and authentication. Confirm the configured share name and path, then test with the named Samba account.
- Test the direct Windows path. Enter
\mint-hostshare-namein File Explorer even if the computer does not appear under Network. - Check network and firewall settings. Confirm that both computers are on a network that allows them to communicate and that the local firewall permits the required SMB traffic. Avoid broad firewall openings.
Do not enable SMB1 as a casual discovery or compatibility fix. A Linux Mint community discussion warns against enabling it, and Microsoft’s security guidance recommends restricting SMB connections to the servers and networks that need them. See Microsoft’s SMB security guidance. Keep a home Samba share off the public internet.

Windows 11 SMB and firewall context
Microsoft identifies SMB as the protocol Windows uses for file sharing and documents a firewall-rule change beginning with Windows 11 version 24H2: built-in firewall rules no longer include SMB NetBIOS ports 137–139. SMB2 or later does not use those ports. This is not a reason to enable SMB1 or open extra ports broadly; follow Microsoft’s guidance to limit SMB exposure to the networks and systems that need it. Details are in Microsoft’s SMB traffic security documentation.
