Electron announced its official community Discord on October 1, 2020, alongside an invitation to contribute during Hacktoberfest that year. Discord remains listed on Electron’s community page as a place to get help and feedback, but the 2020 invitation is not evidence of an Electron Hacktoberfest program in 2026. Hacktoberfest’s current format is different: its FAQ describes more than 300 community events focused on hands-on learning with open-source AI and open-weight models.
What Electron announced in October 2020
Electron’s October 1, 2020 announcement introduced an official Discord server as a central place for community news, help, release updates, and informal conversation. It also invited people to take part in Hacktoberfest 2020 by working on issues tagged hacktoberfest in the Electron repository, Electron’s website, Electron Fiddle, and Electron Forge. The announcement pointed to help wanted issues for contributors looking for more challenging work. Read Electron’s original announcement.

Those issue labels and that invitation belong to the 2020 event. They should not be treated as a current list of open opportunities or confirmation that Electron is participating in Hacktoberfest 2026.

Electron’s current Community page lists Discord as a route for help and feedback. It also directs users to other channels, including the subreddit and Stack Overflow, and provides paths for reporting bugs, requesting features, contributing translations, reporting security issues, and raising conduct concerns. Choose the route that fits the problem rather than assuming every question belongs in Discord.

How to contribute to Electron
For code, documentation, or tool changes, use Electron’s contribution guide rather than relying on an old event announcement. The guide describes a project workflow that covers local setup, making and testing changes, committing, rebasing, opening a pull request, responding to discussion, and getting the change landed.
- Do not change dependency files yourself. Electron says changes to
package.jsonoryarn.lockshould be made only by maintainers, for security reasons. - Review AI-assisted work before submitting it. The guide says unreviewed AI-generated contributions will be declined and contributors must understand and be able to explain their contributions.
Because the guide follows Electron’s main branch and can change, consult it directly for the current workflow and project-specific requirements before opening a pull request.

How Hacktoberfest 2026 differs from the 2020 invitation
Electron’s 2020 post promoted individual repository issues to work on. Hacktoberfest’s 2026 FAQ describes a different event format: more than 300 in-person and online community events worldwide, centered on building, experimenting, and learning with open-source AI and open-weight models. Hacktoberfest 2026 is run by Major League Hacking and DEV in partnership with DigitalOcean.

|---|---|---|
| What year and source? | Electron’s October 1, 2020 blog announcement. | Hacktoberfest’s current 2026 FAQ. |
| What was the participation format? | Work on issues tagged hacktoberfest across Electron-related repositories; help wanted issues were suggested for harder tasks. |
More than 300 community events focused on hands-on building, experimentation, and learning with open-source AI and open-weight models. |
| What should readers verify? | The announcement describes a past event, not current issue availability. | Use the Hacktoberfest FAQ for current event details and Electron’s community and contribution pages for current project routes. An Electron-specific 2026 program is not confirmed by these sources. |
Can you still get involved in open source?
Yes. Hacktoberfest’s FAQ says open-source work can be started year-round; the 2026 event format does not make ordinary project contributions unavailable. If you want to contribute to Electron, start with its current contribution guide and community page. If you want to attend Hacktoberfest activities, check the event’s current FAQ and listings rather than assuming the 2020 issue-based invitation applies.
