Enter the receiver’s brand and test its volume. The exact steps depend on your remote generation, so use Xfinity’s guided setup or code lookup for the specific remote model rather than assuming a TV code will work for the receiver.
Set up receiver control on an X1, Xumo Stream Box, or Flex
For current Xfinity Voice Remotes, begin from the on-screen setup. Xfinity describes receiver control as optional; there is no need to buy a receiver or replace a working remote just to try programming it. See Xfinity’s remote setup instructions.

Aim the remote at the Xfinity TV box. Press the Voice or microphone button and say “Program remote.” Follow the prompts to pair the remote with the box.

When asked whether the remote should control TV power and volume, choose Yes. Enter the TV brand, select OK, and select OK again when “Ready to pair” appears. Test the TV volume; choose It Works! if it responds, or It Doesn’t Work to try again.

When the prompt “Do you want to control your audio receiver using your remote?” appears, choose Yes if you want receiver control. Enter the receiver’s brand, select OK, then select OK at “Ready to pair.” Test the receiver’s volume and confirm It Works! if it responds.
Test the receiver itself, not just the TV box: successful remote-to-box pairing does not prove that receiver commands were programmed.

Find the right path for your remote and TV box
Remote buttons and fallback procedures differ by model. Do not transfer one model’s button sequence to another.

The XR2/XR5 procedure comes from Xfinity’s older XR2/XR5 remote guide; it is separate from the current Voice Remote flow.

Use Xfinity’s code lookup if setup fails
If the guided flow cannot identify the receiver or its test fails, use Xfinity’s Remote Code Lookup and select the exact remote model before searching. On X1, the model is shown near the top center of the Remote Settings screen. Xfinity’s X1 settings overview also describes Remote Setup for RF pairing and IR programming of TV and audio devices.
For XR11 and XR15, Xfinity documents manual fallback sequences for an unlisted TV brand, but those instructions should not be treated as receiver codes. The receiver brand and exact remote model must be checked through the audio setup or code lookup.

Troubleshoot a receiver that does not respond

Confirm the remote is paired to the box in use. A voice remote is associated with one TV box until it is factory reset. If you use another box, check its pairing.

Repeat receiver setup and test again. If the model’s instructions offer alternate codes, try the next applicable code and retest receiver volume (and power where supported).

Check the batteries. Xfinity notes that changing batteries can help when remote buttons do not work.

Reset only as a later step. A factory reset erases the TV-box connection, so you must pair the remote again. Reset combinations vary among XR11, XR15, XR16, XR100, and legacy models; follow the instructions for your exact model in Xfinity’s remote guide.
Xfinity’s published material does not establish support for every receiver or provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list. Check the exact remote in Xfinity’s lookup and verify operation with your receiver.

When to replace the remote
Replacement is relevant if the remote is missing, damaged, or otherwise unsuitable—not as a routine programming step. Xfinity says a replacement can be obtained at a retail store or mailed through Xfinity Assistant; its setup guidance does not require buying a new remote for ordinary receiver setup.
