Pin the apps, folders, and websites you use often
Start works best as a short launchpad for recurring tasks. Add items you reach for regularly rather than trying to put every app there.

- Pin an app: Open Start or taskbar Search, type the app name, right-click the result, and select Pin to Start.
- Pin a folder: In File Explorer, right-click the folder and select Pin to Start.
- Pin a website: Open it in Microsoft Edge, then select More options > More tools > Pin to Start.
- Remove an item: Right-click its Start pin and select Unpin from Start.
For example, a work routine might call for a calendar, a document editor, and a frequently used project folder. Keep the selection tied to what you actually open; a pin is useful only if it makes a recurring action easier to reach. Microsoft documents these pinning steps in its Windows Start Menu customization guide.

Use folders for larger task groups
Drag one pinned item over another to create a folder. Rename the folder, then drag additional pins into it. To remove an item from a folder, drag it back out. Names such as “Work,” “Communication,” or “Creative” can help distinguish groups, but choose labels that match your own routines.
A few frequently used pins may be quicker to access when left as individual items. Folders are more useful when they keep a larger collection organized without crowding the main pinned area.

Choose how much recent and recommended content appears
Go to Settings > Personalization > Start to adjust Start’s content and app-list options. Microsoft’s guidance describes controls for recommended content and options to show or hide recently added apps, most-used apps, and recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer. The labels and availability may differ across Windows builds.
- Keep recent items visible if you use them to resume work or reopen files.
- Reduce recommendation sources you do not use if you prefer a quieter, more predictable Start menu.
These are preference choices, not productivity settings: the useful balance depends on whether you value resurfacing recent work or keeping the menu focused on pins.

Choose how to browse All apps
Windows offers Category, Grid, and List views for the All apps area, according to Microsoft’s support guide. Pick the view that fits how you look for software: categories when you think in groups, a grid when visual scanning works for you, or a list when you prefer names in a straightforward sequence. Start remembers the last-used view and expanded state for the Pinned and All sections.
Add shortcuts to common folders
In Settings > Personalization > Start, open Folders and turn on the shortcuts you want near the power button. Microsoft lists Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Network, and Personal folder among the available examples. Enable only the locations you actually visit; the folder shortcuts complement pinned items rather than replacing them.

Move the Start button without changing your pins
Taskbar alignment is separate from Start menu organization. To move the Start button left or center, right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and choose the alignment. This changes the taskbar’s button placement; it does not rearrange your Start pins.

Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview notes for Windows 11 26H1, KB5124006 (OS Build 28000.3086), describe additional Start controls: Automatic, small, or large sizing; a “Recent” label in place of “Recommended”; an option to hide the user name and profile picture; and separate visibility toggles for Pinned, Recommended, and All. The notes describe a preview and rollout, not settings guaranteed to appear on every PC. Check Settings > Personalization > Start on your installed version to see which controls are available.
