Shared hosting does not come with one standard email spam-protection package. If your host provides cPanel, its Email → Spam Filters page may let you enable SpamAssassin, choose how aggressively it flags messages, and send suspected spam to a review folder. Your host can hide or enforce some of these controls, so what you can configure depends on the provider and server settings.
What shared-hosting spam protection may include
In cPanel, the Spam Filters interface is powered by Apache SpamAssassin. It scores incoming messages and can mark messages that meet the configured threshold as spam. Depending on the host’s configuration, you may also be able to enable Spam Box, manage allow and block lists, and change the threshold.

These controls are not guaranteed on every shared-hosting plan. The provider determines which cPanel features are exposed, and server-level settings can force filtering on or limit account-level choices. If Spam Filters is missing or a control is unavailable, check your host’s documentation or ask support whether it is disabled, managed globally, or offered another way. cPanel documents the available controls in its Spam Filters guide.
Enable filtering and choose how to handle flagged messages
- Open the filtering page. Sign in to cPanel and go to Email → Spam Filters. If the page is not listed, ask your hosting provider whether it exposes the feature for your account.
- Turn on spam processing if the option is available. Enable Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam. Your host may already enforce filtering server-wide, in which case you may not be able to switch it off or control it at the account level.
- Set the threshold cautiously. A lower score is more aggressive; it flags more borderline messages, but also increases the chance that legitimate mail will be marked as spam. cPanel & WHM Documentation warns: “A lower spam threshold score, such as a one, is aggressive and labels many messages as spam, including messages that may not be spam.” Start conservatively, then monitor results and adjust if needed. See cPanel’s threshold guidance.
- Choose whether to keep suspected spam for review. If available, enable Spam Box to route flagged messages to a separate spam folder instead of losing them immediately. Check that folder periodically for false positives and delete unwanted mail: messages in Spam Box still count toward the email account’s storage quota.
If Spam Box is unavailable, ask your host about its filtering options. cPanel also describes email filters as an alternative where the provider makes them available. A filter’s actions and recoverability may differ from Spam Box, so check them before routing or deleting messages.

Inbound filtering and sender authentication do different jobs
SpamAssassin and Spam Box act on incoming mail: one scores and marks messages, while the other can route marked messages for review. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC instead help receiving systems evaluate mail sent using your domain. They are not substitutes for incoming content filtering and do not guarantee that mail will reach an inbox.
- SPF identifies sending services authorized by a domain’s DNS records.
- DKIM uses a signature to help receiving systems verify that a message was authorized and not altered in transit.
- DMARC sets a policy based on SPF and DKIM results and alignment with the visible From domain. cPanel says DMARC requires valid SPF and DKIM.
- PTR, or reverse DNS, maps a sending IP address to a hostname. It is controlled by the owner of the sending IP, commonly the hosting provider.
Check the domain’s outbound-mail records in cPanel
- In cPanel, open Email → Email Deliverability and inspect the domain’s SPF and DKIM status.
- If cPanel reports an issue, use its suggested records only after confirming that they match the service that actually sends your domain’s email. A third-party mail provider may require its own SPF or DKIM values.
- Make DNS changes at the authoritative nameserver—the provider that controls the domain’s active DNS—not necessarily at the company where you registered the domain. cPanel’s Email Deliverability guide explains the interface and record checks.
- Once SPF and DKIM are valid, add or review DMARC at the authoritative DNS provider. Follow cPanel’s DMARC configuration guidance and ensure the policy reflects your sending setup.
These records help receiving systems assess authentication and sending-server identity; they do not filter your inbox. cPanel also lists factors such as sending reputation, frequency, and message content in its guidance on mail delivered to spam folders.

Know who controls each setting
| Setting or feature | What it affects | Who may control it |
|---|---|---|
| Spam Filters and threshold | Scoring and marking incoming mail | You, if the host exposes account-level controls; otherwise the host may manage it in WHM or enforce it globally. |
| Spam Box | Where flagged incoming messages are stored for review | You, if the feature is enabled for your account; the host controls whether it is available. |
| SPF, DKIM, and DMARC | How receiving systems evaluate mail sent using your domain | The administrator of the authoritative DNS can publish records; your mail provider determines the correct sending-service values. |
| PTR/reverse DNS | The hostname associated with a sending IP | The sending-IP owner, commonly the host on shared hosting. |
If a PTR record needs correction, contact your host or the sending-IP owner; shared-hosting customers generally cannot change IP-level reverse DNS themselves. For any missing cPanel control, confirm with the host whether it is hidden, centrally managed, or unavailable on your plan.
