Boston Dynamics is a robotics company founded in 1992 by Marc Raibert as a spin-off from MIT’s Leg Lab. It develops robots for commercial and industrial work: Spot is a quadruped for inspections and data capture, Stretch handles cases in warehouses, and Atlas is a humanoid platform entering industrial deployment. Orbit is fleet-management software, not a robot. Hyundai Motor Group owns 80% of the company and SoftBank, through an affiliate, owns 20%.

What is Boston Dynamics?

Boston Dynamics develops mobile robots intended to work in places built for people, including industrial facilities, construction sites, distribution centers, and warehouses. The company describes its focus as combining mobility, dexterity, and perception to operate in unstructured or difficult-to-navigate environments. Its robots are aimed at commercial, industrial, enterprise, and university research settings rather than individual non-commercial use.

The company’s stated mission is “to deliver the world’s most capable robots, creating value for customers.” That is Boston Dynamics’ own description of its aims, not an independent assessment of its standing in the robotics industry. Boston Dynamics: About Us

What does Boston Dynamics make?

The company’s products address different jobs, so the names are not interchangeable. Spot gathers data while moving through a facility; Stretch moves cases in warehouses; Atlas is being developed for industrial tasks; and Orbit helps teams oversee robot fleets.

Product What it is for How to distinguish it
Spot A quadruped robot for inspections, facility-performance data, and safety-related applications. Mobile inspection and data collection, with an ecosystem that includes payloads, an arm, Orbit, and partner solutions.
Stretch A mobile warehouse robot with a purpose-built arm and gripper for moving cases, including unloading trailers. Specialized case handling, not a general-purpose humanoid.
Atlas An electric humanoid platform for industrial work and material handling. An emerging commercial offering whose deployment and task scope are still developing.
Orbit Fleet-management software for remote operation, autonomous tasks, and facility-context data. Software for managing robot work; it is not a robot.

Boston Dynamics describes Spot and Stretch as commercially available, while Atlas is at an early stage of its commercial journey. Buyers evaluating these systems need to consider the work, site conditions, deployment maturity, and integration requirements rather than treating them as substitutes. The company’s product overview describes the roles and product ecosystem.

What is Atlas’s status in 2026?

Boston Dynamics announced the product version of electric Atlas in January 2026 and said production would begin immediately. It scheduled 2026 fleets for Hyundai’s Robotics Metaplant Application Center and Google DeepMind. Those statements describe plans and scheduled deployments, not confirmation that they have been completed. Boston Dynamics’ announcement and Atlas product page describe the commercial path.

The company lists Atlas at 1.9 m tall and 90 kg, with 56 degrees of freedom, an IP67 rating, and four hours of battery life. These are vendor-published specifications, not independently verified test results or a guarantee of performance in a particular facility. The product page also describes Atlas as able to learn tasks, work with minimal supervision, navigate autonomously, and swap batteries; practical performance depends on the task and deployment context.

Can an individual buy a Boston Dynamics robot?

Boston Dynamics says its robots are intended for commercial, industrial, enterprise, and university research uses, not individual non-commercial purchase. Spot and Stretch are commercially available through product-specific discussions; the company describes Atlas as early in its commercial journey rather than a broadly available retail product. See the company’s FAQ for its stated purchase and use terms.

What should buyers keep in mind?

  • Match the robot to the job: Spot is centered on inspection and data gathering, Stretch on warehouse case movement, and Atlas on developing industrial humanoid applications.
  • Account for deployment maturity: Commercial availability differs by product, and Atlas’s announced 2026 fleet plans should not be read as proof of completed deployments.
  • Plan for integration: Payloads, fleet software, facility context, and site-specific workflows are part of assessing a deployment, not just the robot hardware.
  • Do not infer a cost winner: The cited company material does not establish comparable prices or provide a neutral head-to-head return-on-investment study.

Boston Dynamics also reports customer reach in more than 35 countries in its FAQ. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited measure of deployments or results.
