The first helps guide version-specific code decisions; the second can surface errors, logs, routes, and metadata that are not apparent from source files alone.
How do I get an agent to use documentation for my Next.js version?
Use the documentation shipped with the project’s installed next package, rather than relying only on a model’s general training. The Next.js AI Coding Agents guide, last updated February 27, 2026, recommends a root-level AGENTS.md that tells the agent to find relevant documentation under node_modules/next/dist/docs/ before doing Next.js work. The guide’s existing-project procedure specifies Next.js v16.2.0-canary.37 or later; check the current guide if your project uses another version.

The guide’s example instruction is: “Before any Next.js work, find and read the relevant doc in node_modules/next/dist/docs/. Your training data is outdated — the docs are the source of truth.” This is an example instruction from the Next.js guide, not a guarantee that an agent will always follow it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Choose documentation that matches both the installed version and the repository’s router. Next.js maintains the newer App Router and the original Pages Router, and the bundled documentation includes references for both. Use the material relevant to the project rather than treating every guide as interchangeable. See the AI Coding Agents guide and the Next.js documentation.
When does Next.js DevTools MCP help?
Use MCP when the agent needs information about a running application or development server, particularly for debugging. The Next.js MCP setup guide, last updated February 27, 2026, describes access to errors, logs, page and project metadata, routes, and Server Action lookup, as well as Next.js knowledge and migration or upgrade tools. The guide notes that capabilities are growing, so consult it for the current feature set.
The Next.js team’s February 12, 2026 account explains the problem this addresses: developers had been copying browser errors into AI editors because agents could not see runtime failures, browser JavaScript errors, asynchronous errors, or other application state merely by inspecting page HTML. Jiachi Liu wrote, “The deeper lesson was treating agents as first-class users of Next.js and thinking from their perspective.” That describes the team’s rationale and intended workflow, not an independent measurement of agent performance. The Next.js article on building for an agentic future gives its account.
Configure the MCP connection
The official guide requires Next.js 16 or later and demonstrates a .mcp.json configuration that runs npx -y next-devtools-mcp@latest. The package discovers and connects to a running Next.js instance. Exact configuration can depend on the MCP client, so use the client-specific setup alongside the Next.js MCP Server guide.

Because @latest is a mutable package tag, the version it resolves to can change. Check current package and client instructions when configuring or maintaining the connection.
What do the two kinds of agent context provide?
| Context source | What it helps with | Setup and prerequisites | Maintenance consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed-version documentation | Version-aware framework guidance, including the relevant App Router or Pages Router material. | Use the documentation bundled under node_modules/next/dist/docs/ and instruct the agent to consult it, for example in a root AGENTS.md. The existing-project guide specifies Next.js v16.2.0-canary.37 or later. |
The documentation tracks the installed next package. Revisit the instruction and docs when the dependency changes. |
| Next.js DevTools MCP | Information from a running development instance, including errors, logs, routes, and project or page metadata. | The guide specifies Next.js 16 or later, an MCP client configuration such as .mcp.json, and a running development server. |
The documented tool set is growing, and the example uses the mutable @latest tag. Check current guidance for supported capabilities and client setup. |
These approaches are complementary, not substitutes. Bundled docs are the reference for framework APIs and patterns tied to the project’s installed version. MCP can make selected live application and development-server context available to compatible agents. The Next.js 16 release article also describes DevTools MCP in terms of framework knowledge, unified logs, error access, and page awareness; those are the product’s stated capabilities, not independent validation of its results. See Next.js 16.

What should I check before asking an agent to change or debug the project?
- Confirm the project version and router. Check the installed
nextdependency, then direct the agent to the matching bundled docs and the relevant App Router or Pages Router material. - Add or review the root instruction. Ensure
AGENTS.mdtells the agent to read relevant files undernode_modules/next/dist/docs/before Next.js work. For the existing-project procedure, compare your version with the guide’s statedv16.2.0-canary.37minimum. - Decide whether the task needs live context. For API or framework-pattern questions, version-matched docs may be the key context. For a failure visible only while the app runs, MCP may help expose development-server information.
- Check runtime prerequisites and client setup. The MCP guide states Next.js 16 or later. The installation guide, last updated March 16, 2026, lists Node.js 20.9 as the minimum and supports macOS, Windows (including WSL), and Linux. Verify current requirements in the installation guide.
- Start the development server and connect the MCP client. Use the setup for your client and the current Next.js MCP instructions; then ask for a task-relevant observation, such as what errors are currently in the application.
- Review the agent’s evidence and changes. Context tools can inform an agent, but they do not guarantee correct code. Check its findings against the relevant docs, runtime behavior, and your project’s requirements.
What this setup can—and cannot—establish
Next.js describes documentation access and MCP as ways to give agents better framework and runtime context. Its published material does not provide a controlled benchmark proving a particular increase in correctness, productivity, or time saved. Treat these as practical context mechanisms, not a promise that an agent will diagnose or implement every change correctly.
