Wrapping a phone in aluminum foil can interrupt its radio reception: in a classroom demonstration, the University of Iowa reports that a foil-wrapped phone did not receive a test call. The result depends on how the phone is wrapped, however, and it does not show that foil protects your health or blocks every wireless connection.
What happens when you wrap a phone in aluminum foil?
Aluminum foil is conductive, so enclosing a phone in it can interfere with the radio signals the phone uses to communicate. The University of Iowa describes a simple demonstration: call the phone, wrap it in foil, then call again. In that demonstration, the wrapped phone did not receive the test call.

This is a qualitative demonstration, not a calibrated measurement of signal reduction. It establishes neither a guaranteed result for every phone and environment nor a specific number of foil layers needed to block reception.

Foil touching the phone may act like an extension of its antenna rather than simply blocking reception. The University of Iowa advises placing the phone in a plastic or other insulated bag before wrapping it in foil.

Even a purpose-made radio-isolation enclosure is not automatically reliable. A U.S. government forensics guide identifies insufficient shielding, gaps or leaks at seams, and the shield itself acting like an antenna as possible reasons a product may fail to prevent communication. For a pouch or enclosure, relevant factors include the device coverage, closure and seam construction, and measured attenuation for the frequencies you need to block.
What the demonstration does—and doesn’t—test
A failed test call shows an effect on that call in that setup. It does not establish performance across every cellular band, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, phone model, or location. The University of Iowa demonstration does not report tests of those other connections, and the available sources do not establish a universal attenuation value or a measured rate of call failure.

Does foil protect you from phone radiation?
No health benefit follows from the signal-blocking demonstration. A phone uses radiofrequency (RF) signals to communicate; interrupting reception is a communications effect, not evidence that wrapping the device protects a person from health effects.

Its July 16, 2026 guidance says there is no scientific evidence providing a definite answer about whether cell-phone use causes cancer and that more research is needed. The FDA says the weight of scientific evidence has not linked cell-phone RF radiation with health problems. Neither statement establishes foil wrapping as a health intervention.
