To configure Microsoft Family Safety on Windows 11, create or open a family group with an adult organizer account, invite your child as a member, and connect the child’s Microsoft account to the PC as a standard user. Then configure Windows screen-time schedules, app and game limits, and activity reporting from the Family Safety website or app.
What you need before setup
- An adult Microsoft account to act as the family organizer.
- A Microsoft account for the child, which they will use to accept the invitation and sign in to Windows.
- Access to the Windows 11 PC so you can allow the child’s account on that device.
The family group is the control center for invitations and settings. Microsoft describes organizers as administrators who can manage members, limits, permissions, and activity for members whose reporting is enabled. See Microsoft’s explanation of family groups.

How do I add my child to Microsoft Family Safety?
- Go to account.microsoft.com/family and sign in with the adult account that will organize the family group.
- Select Add a family member, choose the Member role, enter the child’s email address or phone number, and send the invitation.
- Have the child accept the invitation by signing in to their Microsoft account. Microsoft says only organizers can add family members; see how to add people to a family group.
Connect the child’s account to Windows 11
- On the PC, open Settings > Accounts > Family & other people.
- Under Your family, select the child’s account and choose Allow.
- Have the child sign in to Windows with that Microsoft account. The PC should then appear among the child’s connected devices in Family Safety.
Keep the child’s Windows account as a standard user, not an administrator. Microsoft warns that Family features may not work properly when the child uses an administrator account. Device connection and account guidance is in Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting steps.
Set a Windows screen-time schedule
- Open the Family Safety app or visit the family website, then select the child.
- Choose the Windows platform and open the screen-time controls.
- Set permitted hours and a daily time allowance. Schedules can differ by day, and a schedule can be applied to other days.
This is the whole-device schedule: it governs time on connected devices rather than setting a separate allowance for each application. Microsoft’s instructions are at Set screen time limits across devices.

Set app and game limits separately
- Select the child and the Windows platform in Family Safety.
- Open Apps and games and enable limits.
- Choose an app or game, then set its daily allowance and permitted schedule. Adjust other apps or games individually as needed.
These per-app and per-game limits are separate from the whole-device screen-time schedule. Microsoft states that time limits do not work on websites; related websites can instead be blocked through the app and game settings. See Microsoft’s app and game limit instructions.
Choose content filtering and activity reporting
Web and search filtering
Family Safety web filtering applies to supported browsers, not every browser. Web and search activity reporting also depends on the child using a supported browser while signed in to their Microsoft account. App and game filtering is documented for Windows and Xbox, but coverage differs by feature and platform. Check Microsoft’s app and game filtering guidance and its web and search filtering guidance for the feature you intend to use.

Activity reporting
An organizer can enable reporting for the relevant platform and view app, game, screen-time, and supported-browser web and search activity. Only organizers can enable or disable reports and view them. Use the reporting controls for the child and platform in the Family Safety app or website; details are in Microsoft’s activity reporting instructions.

Reporting and consent rules can depend on the child’s age and location. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says children who meet the applicable local age may opt out of activity sharing; it gives age 13 in the United States and notes that the threshold can differ in other countries. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for that qualification.

Why aren’t Family Safety limits working?
- Confirm the family connection. Check that the child is still a member of the family group and that the Windows PC is connected to the child’s account.
- Check the account type. The child should use a standard Windows account rather than an administrator account.
- Verify the child’s account. Follow any account verification prompts, then check whether the limits apply.
- Reapply the limits. Microsoft advises trying to remove and add the limits again if they do not take effect.
- Allow for a reporting mismatch. Signed-in time can count toward a limit even while the PC is idle, while the activity report may show much less active use. Enforcement time and reported active use therefore may not match.
