The hub must be powered on and ready to pair; exact power, network, and pairing steps vary by model.
Before you start: check whether you need a hub
Not every SmartThings device needs a hub. Some devices can be added directly in the app, but Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. Before buying or pairing a device, check regional availability in the app at Menu > Supported devices. Support can depend on the device, region, and current software.

If you already own a supported hub, you may not need another. Check that it supports the protocols and exact devices you plan to use. For Matter devices, also verify the controller model and software requirements. SmartThings identifies the 2018 SmartThings Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter controllers in its Matter guidance.
Check Thread requirements for Matter devices
A Thread-based Matter device needs a Matter controller that also provides a Thread Border Router. The 2015 SmartThings Hub does not include a Thread router, so a separate compatible Thread Border Router is required to connect Thread devices. Confirm the requirements for your specific model and device before setup.

SmartThings Hub 3rd Generation [GP-U999SJVLGDA] Smart Home Automation Hub Home Monitoring Smart Devices - Alexa Google Home Compatible - Zigbee, Z-Wave, Cloud to Cloud Protocols – White- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
The 2015 SmartThings Hub uses a special onboarding route in the app because it has no QR code. For model-specific steps, use the official SmartThings hub connection instructions.
Add compatible devices to the hub
Adding the hub does not automatically add the devices in your home. Add each device separately from Devices > Add (+). Depending on the device, the app may offer a QR scan, nearby scan, or brand and model selection. Put the device into pairing mode using its manufacturer’s instructions; the procedure differs by device.
For a Matter device, scan its QR code or enter its setup code, then select the hub and room when prompted. A Thread device may also require you to select a Thread network. Use SmartThings’ Matter setup instructions for model and software details.
Connect a cloud-based service
Some devices connect through the manufacturer’s online service rather than pairing locally to the hub. For those, connect the manufacturer’s service in SmartThings under Linked Services. Availability and the exact prompts depend on the service and device.

SmartThings provides these checks in its Matter troubleshooting guidance.
If a Z-Wave device will not connect
After repeated unsuccessful attempts, SmartThings advises excluding the Z-Wave device from the hub settings, then physically confirming exclusion at the device—typically by pressing a button on it. Follow the device-specific instructions and the hub connection guidance.
Do not remove the hub as a casual retry
Removing a hub restores it to factory settings and permanently deletes its associated device connections, Routines, configurations, and Services. Devices may also need to be reset or excluded before they can be connected again. Treat hub removal as a reset with lasting consequences, not a routine pairing fix; see SmartThings’ instructions and removal warning.
