You may be able to set up a Samsung Smart TV without its remote by using the TV’s physical control or the smartphone setup option in SmartThings, if that option appears on your model. If neither can navigate the setup screen, check your TV’s exact model number and get a compatible replacement remote. Samsung’s setup steps and available controls vary by model and region.
1. Turn on the TV and check its physical controls
If the TV is off, look for a button or control stick along the bottom edge, on the front or side bezel, or underneath the set. The location and available functions differ by model. Samsung says some TVs provide basic control this way, but the onboard control may not support every action needed during initial setup. See Samsung’s guidance on controlling a TV without a remote.

Once the screen is on, note what it asks you to do. If you see an option for smartphone setup, try SmartThings before looking for a replacement remote.

Connect the phone to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use for the TV. Samsung’s U.S. setup guidance says the phone should already be on that network for smartphone setup.

Choose the smartphone setup option on the TV, then follow the on-screen pairing or QR-code instructions in the app.
The available setup flow depends on the TV. Samsung describes both remote-based and smartphone setup, but does not promise that every new TV will offer SmartThings pairing before initial setup is complete. See Samsung’s U.S. TV setup instructions.

3. Don’t confuse initial setup with using your phone as a remote
SmartThings can provide remote controls for a TV added to the app, but Samsung’s remote-control instructions describe selecting a TV that is powered on and connected to SmartThings, then opening Remote Control. That is different from pairing a phone with a TV that has not completed setup. If the app cannot find a new TV, return to the TV’s setup screen and use the options it actually offers rather than assuming the phone remote will appear automatically.
4. Connect to the network only when you can control the setup
For Wi-Fi, you need the network name and password. Samsung also documents a wired option: connect an Ethernet cable from the TV’s LAN port, or the One Connect Box where applicable, to the router or modem. A wired connection can provide network access, but it does not move a selection on the screen or replace an input control. Follow Samsung’s internet connection guidance for the connection type available on your set.
5. If the setup screen is stuck, choose the next step by what still works

The TV offers smartphone setup: use SmartThings with the phone on the intended Wi-Fi network and follow the TV’s pairing prompts.

The TV is on, but phone setup is not offered: try the onboard button or control stick for basic navigation. Do not assume it supports every setup action.

The TV needs a network connection: enter Wi-Fi details if you can navigate the screen, or connect Ethernet if a wired connection suits your setup. Neither method resolves a lack of menu control.

No available control can complete setup: find the exact TV model number and obtain a replacement Samsung TV remote confirmed compatible with that model. Check compatibility and any pairing or setup requirements before buying; do not assume an arbitrary universal remote will work.

Could a keyboard or mouse help?
Possibly, but treat this as a model-dependent experiment rather than a dependable way to finish initial setup. Samsung Gulf says most of its TVs from 2014 onward support external keyboards and mice, while directing users to verify support for their particular model. That guidance does not establish that these devices can navigate every initial setup screen. See Samsung Gulf’s keyboard and mouse guidance.
Check the exact model if the instructions don’t match
Button locations, setup order, interface, and supported features differ across models and regions. Samsung Australia explicitly notes that its setup sequence can vary and that its guidance is for Australian products. Use the support page for your region and the manual for your exact model when the on-screen steps differ from these instructions; begin at Samsung Australia’s Smart TV setup page.
