On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings > Family > Add > Create Child Account, enter the child’s name and birthday, and follow Apple’s prompts. The account joins the Family Sharing group. You can then set up a new iPhone for the child or sign in on a device that is already configured.
Before you create the account
- Check who can create it. The person creating the account should be the Family Sharing organizer or a parent or guardian in the group.
- Check age eligibility for your location. Apple says a Child Account is required for children under 13 and can be created for children up to age 18, but the minimum age varies by country or region. Enter the child’s real birthday; Apple uses age information for age-based protections. See Apple’s Child Account guidance.
- Use a separate account. Apple recommends giving a child their own Apple Account rather than sharing an account with another family member.
Create a Child Account from the parent’s iPhone
- On the parent or guardian’s iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then tap Add.
- Choose Create Child Account.
- Enter the child’s name and birthday, then follow the onscreen instructions to finish.
Apple’s account guide says the new account becomes part of the Family Sharing group. The group can include the organizer and up to five other people, according to Apple’s current Family Sharing guidance. The exact account and Family Sharing options may vary by country or region.

Set up the child’s iPhone
If the iPhone is new
You can use Quick Start from the parent or guardian’s signed-in iPhone: bring it near the new iPhone and follow the setup prompts. Apple also provides a setup path that does not use Quick Start. During setup, a child aged 12 or younger may need the iPhone connected to a parent or guardian’s device; Apple notes that age requirements can vary by location. Follow the prompts shown for your region and devices. See Apple’s iPhone setup guide.

On the child’s iPhone, use the sign-in options in Settings to enter the child’s Apple Account and password. Apple also documents signing in with a nearby Apple device. If the child does not yet have an account, the sign-in flow may offer a way to create one. Consult Apple’s instructions for signing in during iPhone setup for the current prompts.

After the child is in Family Sharing, an organizer or parent or guardian can manage controls through the family settings. Apple lists controls for app and website access, communication, device-use schedules, and content and privacy restrictions. Ask to Buy can require approval for eligible purchases. These options are adjustable; availability and defaults can differ based on device, age, country, or region. See Apple’s Family Sharing and parental-control guidance.
What changes with iOS 27 family controls
Apple describes redesigned parental controls in version 27, including quick actions, more flexible schedules and time limits, and ways for parents to approve what a child uses. In Apple’s version 27 guidance, the redesigned experience requires the relevant devices in the Family Sharing group to be updated to version 27 software. Updating only the parent’s iPhone may not be enough for those features to appear across the family.
