A child can feel real sadness when a robot they love breaks or is retired. Take that sadness seriously, explain plainly what happened to the machine, and let the child choose whether to talk, remember it, or say goodbye. The robot stopped working; it did not die as a living being. There is no established robot-specific grief timeline or treatment for children.
Why a child may feel attached to a robot
Children can give a social robot emotional or symbolic meaning, and some may describe one as a friend or family member. A study of children and families engaging with a retired social robot documents this kind of attachment, but it does not show that every child forms one or predict how a child will react when a robot is gone. The 2025 study of a retired social robot is evidence that attachment can matter—not a clinical study of children’s grief.

That distinction matters: respecting a child’s feelings does not require pretending the robot is human or alive. A 2022 ethics analysis recommends “responsible design that avoids positioning the robot companion as the equivalent of a human companion, for instance by avoiding situations when the robot reciprocates affection as if it were a true friend.” That is the authors’ design recommendation, not a finding about how an individual child will grieve. Read the analysis by Constantinescu and colleagues.
First find out what happened—and what the child thinks
Before explaining, ask an open question such as, “What do you think happened to the robot?” Then listen for what the child misses or wonders about. They might be sad, angry, curious, amused, or show little reaction. Avoid telling them how they feel; pediatric guidance on bereavement recommends clear, age-appropriate explanations and making room for different responses. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on how children understand death concerns human death, so apply its communication principles thoughtfully rather than treating robot loss as the same event.

Explain the robot’s condition honestly
Match the explanation to what you know. If a repair is being attempted, say that the robot is not working now and that you do not yet know whether it can be fixed. If a repair shop has confirmed it cannot be repaired, you might say: “The robot’s parts stopped working, and the repair shop says it cannot be fixed.” Use simple, direct language; do not say it is asleep, went away, or will come back unless that is actually true.
If there is no specific reason to think otherwise, reassure the child that they did not cause the breakdown by loving, playing with, or neglecting the robot. This adapts pediatric advice about blame in a death to a mechanical failure; it is not a result established by robot-loss research.

Respond differently to a temporary outage and a permanent loss
- Temporarily unavailable: Explain what is known about the repair or outage and what remains uncertain. Avoid promising a return date unless one has been confirmed.
- Permanently broken or retired: Be clear that the robot will not work again if that is the confirmed situation. Offer the child a chance to remember it or mark the goodbye, without requiring a ritual.
- Software or online companion: Explain whether the service, account, or particular features have changed, rather than describing a physical robot as broken. Evidence about adults’ reactions to AI companions is not a guide to children’s responses.
Let the child decide how to say goodbye
Offer, but do not insist on, a small activity: drawing a favorite memory, keeping a photo, or having a family goodbye. The AAP’s pet-loss guidance suggests a memorial or ritual and advises following the child’s wishes; applying that advice to a robot is an optional, practical adaptation, not a tested robot-specific intervention. See the AAP’s guidance on helping a child after a pet dies.
Do not rush to buy another robot to make the sadness disappear. A new device is a different experience, not the same friend returned. Let the child’s feelings have room before deciding whether a replacement makes sense for other reasons.

What studies can—and cannot—tell us
There is not enough direct evidence to prescribe a timeline, diagnosis, or treatment for a child grieving a robot. The most directly relevant study concerns families and a retired social robot, not a clinical grief trial. Guidance about human and pet loss can offer careful communication ideas, but it is an analogy rather than proof that the experiences are equivalent.
A 2026 Nature Human Behaviour study examined adults’ reactions to changes in AI companions. Its authors analyzed 54,861 social-media posts and surveyed 1,452 participants, reporting more loss framing and desires to restore the companion after disruptive changes. Those counts describe that study’s adult participants and posts; they are not estimates of how many children grieve robots and should not be used to predict a particular child’s response. When to seek extra support
Consider contacting the child’s pediatrician if distress is severe or persistent, or if you notice ongoing sleep problems, anxiety, or depression. Self-harm or suicidal talk calls for urgent help, especially if there is an immediate safety concern. These are general pediatric warning signs, not robot-specific thresholds. The AAP offers broader guidance on grief and loss in childhood.

A general bereavement book or activity resource may help a child who wants one, but such materials are not robot-specific treatments. Child Bereavement UK lists activity books and resources for bereaved children and offers an adult-facing guide, A Child’s Grief.
